Bubbles and more bubbles and more bubbles ... The economic bubble machine!
Financing bubbles are what give the stock market it's characteristic shape. That, along with nervous investors. What we should note is that the nature and shape of the banking structure has changed alongside the stock markets of today. It is the interaction between restructured markets that is causing volatility. The banking sector grew the house property market so fast it bust before it could pay for itself. The speed that bubblesz emerge is alarming. Not surprising that per capita income gets so badly skewed.
Yes!
We will continue to see many investment bubbles because banks are capable of financing them. Bubbles are overinvestment based on credit that is not warranted by the fundamentals of sufficient income to repay debt. Our low interest rates are indicative of bank restructuring that has got it's ass in a twist. By driving interest rates to zero over the long term, we have consigned savings to be driven by current income which is inequitous and dangerous to say the least.
As economists, we can see the need to resurrect the Hicks instability economic models of the post war period to see how the new parameters of economic boom and bust will govern modern day economies. Change the banking structure to manageable parameters of credit expansion and you might just put together economies that are more stable and save people a whole lot of hastle wallowing in zero interest boom and bust world of underemployment and debt.
We used to say interest rates guided investment in a non communist economy. Now we have no guide and have to ask whether many or most of our present investments will be misdirected into bubbles.
Well maybe prices don't guide ecoomic choice, but that would be a new orthodoxy and a very tenuous one at best.
We need sustainable lending not bubble lending!
Governments in uncertain times invest in new weapons as is the case of Russia under Putin. The opportunist sits watching for the weaknesses of our economy and disgruntled capitalists to declare the next spring revolution and it could very easily be further west.

Dawn of the Russian Spring?
Message received today.
It's very serious that Russia is supporting the Syrian regime. Brings the world that much closer to a war involving everyone.
Subject: Dawn of the Russian Spring?
Avaaz.org - The World in Action Dear friends,
Something dramatic is happening right now in Russia -- tens of thousands are flooding the streets to oppose Vladimir Putin and his corrupt clan. If we join the world in surging behind them, this could be the tipping point that starts the Russian Spring.
![]()
It's extraordinary. Tens of thousands of Russians are right now taking great personal risks to march against Russian President.
Vladimir Putin has seen the Arab Spring sweep autocrats from power and is desperate to snuff out this movement before it grows. But if the demonstrators sustain large numbers in the street and global pressure mounts on him, Putin will have to back down and introduce real reforms. This is Russia's Tahrir Square moment, and global public support is like oxygen for the movement -- let's show the people of Russia that the world is with them in their struggle.
The protesters are braving arrest or worse to stand for freedom. The least we can do is symbolically stand with them to show Putin that the tide of history is against him. Sign the statement of support now and forward this widely so it circles the globe:
http://www.avaaz.org/en/russian_spring/?bBEuVbb&v=15116
As Putin has dragged Russia back towards an autocracy, he's also been responsible for some of the most horrific images the world has seen in recent weeks. His support for the Syrian regime has enabled it to massacre the women and children we've seen on our nightly news. A global backlash against him is not only good for Russia, it's good for the world.
Putin has consolidated power so effectively that he rode to a third term in May after dubious elections. But not even he can ride out mass, middle-class peaceful protest, which is why he is desperate to stop it. Last week, the Russian Parliament enacted a draconian law dramatically increasing fines for protesters, and then last night agents raided the homes of the opposition organizers, evoking the days of Josef Stalin.
The stakes are huge and the lines are drawn between Russia's corrupt, authoritarian rulers and its peaceful citizens -- let's show the protesters they are not alone in this struggle and help launch the Russian Spring. Add your voice and forward to everyone:
http://www.avaaz.org/en/russian_spring/?bBEuVbb&v=15116
Avaaz members have supported anti-corruption and democracy movements from India and Brazil to Burma and Bahrain, and stood with Occupy protesters the world over. This is Russia's moment to unleash a powerful movement for accountability and freedom -- let's show them our support now.
With hope and determination,
Stephanie, Alaphia, Ian, Ricken, Tihomir, Vilde, Luca and the whole Avaaz team

Electric Cars and the VOLT .... Guess who broke her wrist this morning!
So you think you know cars? Read this email from my brother:
> > Hi Arthur,
> > Our condolences to Anne! Must have been a shock.
> > I'm very pleased with the Volt's performance - can drive to work and back on battery power and still have 22 km left over. So no gasoline use for work driving. Plug it in in the evening and it's fully charged by morning. Will have to go on a longer drive to use the gasoline engine. When you coast or brake, the car recharges the battery - so when I drive to work it's mostly down hill and even though it's 22 km, I only use up 5 km on the battery charge. However, coming back home is uphill and on the expressway, so use up more than the actual distance. Very interesting to watch energy use and adjust driving - actually it's safer driving - slower acceleration from stops and lots of coasting and slow braking in anticipation of stopping.

Modern day slavery! Yes, it does exist! Why?
Governments should review the policies on labelling of all products so that consumers can decide what not to buy and severe internationally legislated penalties can be charged and arrests made for products using slave labour.
Intervention really is needed on a massive scale to end products that embody illegal production technologies, such as slave labour.

IMF boss who pays no tax lectures Greek people | Green Left Weekly
And, rightly so!
The green left article referred to below is badly informed because international salaries of most UN groups are quoted after tax for very very obvious reasons had the writer bothered to check the charters of the post war organizations. Still as an after tax amount the amount is just attractive enough for someone who would be worth several million after tax income in the modern financial economy to give that up to work for the IMF. The MD should be congratulated. She is sacrificing income not profiteering. Responsible use of one's income should be supported not castigated as the green left writer does! Such talk is not worthy of serious thinking individuals and is pandering to thoughtless biases!
Reality is that financial market people and senior government officials in almost all countries really do command and must a higher than average salary. Their work is not for the uneducated and irresponsible. Their work is for steady responsibility and dedication to a balanced life over the long term.
One needs to separate markets according to risk. The issue with property speculation is that banks were engaged in activities that they could not afford. They could not cover the risk adequately. Why? The reason is because governments like that in Greece did not pay attention to long term financial sustainability. A good banker cringes when banks lend to the property market because historically that market is very high risk during periods when government wish to create jobs.
In America, the slow pace of the economy is a reflection of the absense of a property boom and so be it. This will ultimately free up activity from real estate to productive services and manuafacturing. In the short term, however, there is a shortage of skills and people need to be educated. This is a very real problem in a country where tuition fees are very high and impede reorganisation away from speculation. In about fifteen years the property boom cycle could be repeated, but that would be because of irresponsible government / banking policy which has not learned the lesson that property growth needs to match capacity to repay loans over the long term an activity unsuited for banks that tend to focus on short term money management!
Also, the logic of the writer is almost stupid! If you save and work hard you deserve a good salary. The problem really lies with people who gamble on the property market. Behind the Greek crisis are loads of people who have won big in Greece through speculation in property. Many of these individuals are associated with American banks. As regards Australia, one can have respect that the property bubble was not as excessive as seen elsewhere!

Sketches from scratches is a provocative blogspot that has grown out of the Wuh Lax experience. It is eclectic, which means that it might consider just about anything from the simple to the extremely difficult. A scratch can be something that is troubling me or a short line on paper. From a scratch comes a verbal sketch or image sketch of the issue or subject. Other sites have other stuff that should really be of interest to the broad reader. I try to develop themes, but variety often comes before depth.
