Krugman: Inflationary cult a symptom of overly polarized, political society - Houston Chronicle

"Whom are we talking about? Not just the shouting heads on CNBC, although they're certainly part of it. Rick Santelli, famous for his 2009 Tea Party rant, also spent much of that year yelling that runaway inflation was coming. It wasn't, but his line never changed. Just two months ago, he told viewers that the Federal Reserve is "preparing for hyperinflation."

You might dismiss the likes of Santelli, saying that they're basically in the entertainment business. But many investors didn't get that memo. I've had professional investors tell me that the quiescence of inflation surprised them, because "all the experts" predicted that it would surge."

Women important in world economic recovery

"TOKYO (AP) -- Empowerment of women and equal opportunities are crucial for driving a stronger global economic recovery, and for revitalizing Japan, the head of the International Monetary Fund said Friday.

The global recovery is too tepid and too turbulent, IMF chief Christine Lagarde told a gathering organized by the Japanese government and business groups to support Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's campaign to promote a bigger role for women in the economy."

Recovery of stolen assets makes progress but more needs to be done, according to latest report

"According to the report, OECD members increased the total assets frozen in the period 2010-2012 from US$1.225 billion to US$1.398 billion. Additional findings also showed that more assets were returned to developing countries; that countries were more successful in freezing and returning stolen assets through innovative legal avenues and powers; and that countries with established asset recovery policies and solid legal and institutional frameworks, such as Switzerland, the US and the UK, achieved greater success in returning the proceeds of corruption. These latter successes provide useful experience and practices for others to follow."

"One dreadful consequence of the US-UK invasion is depicted in a New York Times "visual guide to the crisis in Iraq and Syria": the radical change of Baghdad from mixed neighborhoods in 2003 to today's sectarian enclaves trapped in bitter hatred. The conflicts ignited by the invasion have spread beyond and are now tearing the entire region to shreds."

University of Glasgow :: University news

"Scientists have taken a major step forward in the production of hydrogen from water which could lead to a new era of cheap, clean and renewable energy.

Chemists from the University of Glasgow report in a new paper in Sciencetoday (Friday 12 September) on a new form of hydrogen production which is 30 times faster than the current state-of-the-art method. The process also solves common problems associated with generating electricity from renewable sources such as solar, wind or wave energy."

New wearable robotic exoskeleton gives you superhuman powers (Science Alert)

"A team of researchers at Harvard University have developed a prototype robotic exoskeleton, otherwise know as a 'smart suit'. Made from soft materials and worn from the waist down, the device has been designed to gradually assist the wearer in the movements they're making, supplementing their natural power by up to 20 percent.

"You actually don't really notice that it's helping you. But as soon as you turn the system off, it makes you instantly feel that your legs are heavy, which shows that your legs have adapted," engineer Conor Walsh, head of Harvard's Biodesign Lab, told Jessica Leber at FastCompany.

Not only could this suit be used to enhance the movements of soldiers and firefighters, making them faster, more agile, and better able to transport heavy equipment, but it could also be worn by stroke victims to make the slow and painful recovery process easier, and the elderly, to protect them from life-threatening falls and injuries. But don't worry about your grandma looking like a cyborg - the exoskeleton has been designed to be so lightweight and flexible, it can be worn under clothing. "

One step closer to curing heart disease, researchers create blood vessels - The Inside Korea · 인사이드 코리아

"SNU hospital cardiologists developed a way to transdifferentiate adult skin fibroblasts (SFBs) directly into vascular endothelial cells (iECs) without turning the fibroblasts into induced pluripotent stem cells. Up until now, researchers generally tried to cultivate induced pluripotent stem cells from the fibroblasts and then transdifferentiate the stem cells into vascular endothelial cells. However, this traditional process can cause an outbreak of tumors and cultivating stem cells can be very complicated, making the technology's commercialization difficult."

Former National Ignition Facility head to lead telescope project - SFGate

"(09-12) 17:35 PDT SAN FRANCISCO --Ed Moses, who until a year ago led efforts to create a self-sustaining source of thermonuclear energy at the National Ignition Facility in Livermore, has taken a new job as head of a project to build the world's largest ground-based telescope in Chile.

Known as the Giant Magellan Telescope, or GMT, the instrument will combine seven huge optical mirrors to yield the observing power and sensitivity of a single adjustable mirror 800 feet in diameter.

Moses, an eminent laser scientist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory since 1980, took a leave from NIF about a year ago after enduring years of controversy as science teams there repeatedly proved unable to achieve their goal of what in effect would be controlling the energy of an H-bomb to possibly provide a sustainable source of clean power."

Bloc led by Russia and China criticizes U.S. over missile defense | Reuters

(Reuters) - A security bloc led by China and Russia took a swipe at the United States on Friday, saying the development of unilateral missile defense systems would undermine global security.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), which also includes four Central Asian states, did not name the United States in a statement issued at a summit in the Tajik capital, Dushanbe.

But Russia in particular has long been critical of Washington over its plans to build a global missile defense shield and Moscow sees the system as a security threat.

"The unilateral and unlimited capacity of individual states' or groups of states' missile defense systems will be detrimental to international security and strategic stability," the statement said.
