Deutsche Bank On The Bond Bubble - Business Insider

"It has long been our view that over the last couple of decades the global economy has rolled from bubble to bubble with excesses never fully being allowed to unravel. Instead aggressive policy responses have encouraged them to roll into new bubbles. This has arguably kept the modern financial system as we know it a going concern. Clearly there have always been bubbles formed through history but has there been a period like the last 20 years where the bursting of one bubble has consistently led directly to the formation of the next?"

Paul Krugman: The Fed Should Wait Until It Sees 'The Whites Of Their Eyes' - Business Insider

"One of the hottest topics in the world right now has to do with the strength of the US recovery, and when the Fed should raise rates. In a recent interview, Paul Krugman explains that the Fed should be in no rush to hurry, and that it should see the whites of inflation's eyes."

Should Public Policy Promote Better Habits?

"O.K., that's an overstatement. But both concerns about the health effects of urban layouts and attempts to deter certain kinds of consumption are basically about the failings of rationality as a model of human behavior. People should get enough exercise - they will, in general, be happier if they do - but they tend not to get exercise if they live in an environment where it's easy to drive everywhere and not as easy to walk. People should also limit their caloric intake - again, they'll be happier if they do - but they have a hard time resisting those giant tubs of popcorn."

Even More On Scotland - It's doomed ....

"It is, in short, that this analysis doesn't seem to reflect the unpleasant things we've learned from the euro crisis. To be blunt, the reassurances from the working group sound like the kind of thing euro defenders used to say pre-2010. Unfortunately, we've discovered that sharing a currency without sharing a government is a lot more dangerous than even euro skeptics realized."

Ozone layer shows signs of recovery after 1987 ban on damaging gases | Environment | The Guardian

"The ozone layer that shields life from the sun's cancer-causing ultraviolet rays is showing its first sign of thickening after years of dangerous depletion, a UN study said on Wednesday.

Experts said it showed the success of a 1987 ban on manmade gases that damage the fragile high-altitude screen, an achievement that would help prevent millions of cases of skin cancer and other conditions."

LNG news - B.C and First Nations collaborate on LNG initiative

'Announced in May 2014 at the International LNG in B.C. Conference, the initiative was launched as a response to First Nations seeking a government commitment to more collaborative forms of environmental management. These workshops are the next step in designing the stewardship initiative, offering participants the opportunity to identify projects, priorities and management structure of the initiative.

First Nations have indicated an interest in participating in the development of information used to make resource management decisions. The development of the Liquefied Natural Gas Environmental Stewardship Initiative is one instrument the Province and First Nations will be using to incorporate Aboriginal values into resource management decisions.'

Apple Watch announcement hurts watchmaker stocks - Yahoo Finance UK

"Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed the Apple Watch an hour into the announcement, which was at about 2pm in New York. Shares in Movado - the luxury watchmaker whose brands include Coach, Hugo Boss and Tommy Hlifiger - fell 2pc from their intraday high. Fossil, the company behind Armani, DKNY and Diesel watches, saw its stock lose almost 3pc. Shares in Guess, which relies on watches for a good chunk of its sales, also fell."

Review: Apple Watch looks to be another winner - Yahoo News

"Beyond looks, it's great that the Apple Watch isn't simply adopting the smartphone way of doing things. The operating system, Watch OS, was designed specifically for the watch, and its interface relies heavily on the dial to the right, known as the digital crown. Competing watches tend to emphasize the voice and touch controls found on phones."

Elimination of Vitamin D Receptor in Vascular Endothelial Cells Alters Vascular Function

"Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with cardiovascular dysfunction. We evaluated the role of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in vascular endothelial function, a marker of cardiovascular health, at baseline and in the presence of angiotensin II, using an endothelial-specific knockout of the murine VDR gene. Sit All Day Long? Doing This Just Once an Hour Could Reverse Some Negative Health Effects | TheBlaze.com

""There is plenty of epidemiological evidence linking sitting time to various chronic diseases and linking breaking sitting time to beneficial cardiovascular effects, but there is very little experimental evidence," said Saurabh Thosar, who began the research as a doctoral student at Indiana University before graduating to conduct postdoc research at Oregon Health & Science University. "We have shown that prolonged sitting impairs endothelial function, which is an early marker of cardiovascular disease, and that breaking sitting time prevents the decline in that function."

Craters have appeared on two glaciers in Iceland | GlacierHub

"A reconnaissance flight over Bárðarbunga, the volcano where the first earthquakes were detected last month, shows that the ice over the caldera has fallen nearly 20 meters across an area about 7 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide. This is a change in volume of 250 million cubic meters. The scientists at the University of Iceland attribute this shift to a movement of the base of the glacier rather than to melting. Magma has drained from a chamber under the glacier as it moves to the northeast and erupts onto the surface. As the chamber has emptied, the rock above it has shifted downward, carrying the glacier ice downward as well. This is the largest subsidence that has been observed in Iceland since measurements of the surface were begun over fifty years ago. This movement does not seem to be associated with geothermal activity at Bárðarbunga, or of a higher likelihood of an eruption there. A recent photo from a helicopter flight shows the large extent and relative shallowness of this cauldron (the technical term for these craters)."

Holuhraun Largest Lava Eruption in Iceland since 19th Century | Iceland Review

"The ongoing volcanic eruption in Holuhraun has already become the largest lava eruption in Iceland since the 19th century, according to volcanologist Ármann Höskuldsson. More lava has been emitted than in the largest lava eruption of the 20th century, Krafla in 1984."

Bárðarbunga Eruption Major Worry | Iceland Review

"An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 shook the area to the northeast of Bárðarbunga this morning at 5:28 am.

The probability of an eruption in Bárðarbunga is now thought to be increased due to a steady lowering of the surface above the volcano's crater. This greatly worries scientists and Civil Protection Department representatives, ruv.is reports.

An eruption in Bárðarbunga, which lies underneath Vatnajökull glacier, could potentially be massive, emitting high quantities of ash into the air, according to geophysicist Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson. The glacial melt water would ultimately break out as a great flood in one of the glacial rivers. This is the scenario which the Civil Protection Department is preparing for."

Iceland Volcanic Eruption Sends Toxic Gases Throughout Region - WSJ

Is this the system of volcanos that seriously gassed Europe in the 1700's?

"Foul-smelling gases from a volcanic eruption in Iceland are pestering the region, reaching Norway and Finland more than a thousand kilometers away.

Unusually high concentrations of volcanic gases from the continuing Holuhraun eruption have been detected as far away as Finland. In Iceland, health authorities are urging locals near the volcano to stay inside due to significant levels of sulfur in the air."

Sketches from scratches is a provocative blogspot that has grown out of the Wuh Lax experience. It is eclectic, which means that it might consider just about anything from the simple to the extremely difficult. A scratch can be something that is troubling me or a short line on paper. From a scratch comes a verbal sketch or image sketch of the issue or subject. Other sites have other stuff that should really be of interest to the broad reader. I try to develop themes, but variety often comes before depth. ... more!
