(BN) U.S. Economy Expands Amid Biggest Gains in Consumer Spending in Four Years

Bloomberg News, sent from my iPad.

U.S. Economy: Growth Accelerates as Consumers Boost Spending

Jan. 28 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. economy accelerated in the fourth quarter of 2010 as consumer spending climbed by the most in more than four years.

Gross domestic product grew at a 3.2 percent annual rate, Commerce Department figures showed today in Washington, falling short of the 3.5 percent median forecast of 85 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News because of a slowdown in inventories. Excluding stockpiles, the economy rose at a 7.1 percent pace, the most since 1984.

"The consumer really drove the economy in the fourth quarter," said Guy LeBas, chief fixed-income strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott LLC in Philadelphia, who accurately forecast the rate of growth. "The economy has moved beyond recovery to a stable state of growth."

The dollar advanced on expectations the revival in demand will extend into this year, boosting sales at companies including General Electric Co. and Apple Inc. At the same time, the report showed the Federal Reserve's preferred measure of inflation climbed at the slowest pace on record, bolstering forecasts the central bank won't raise borrowing costs until 2012.

Stocks fell as shares of Ford Motor Co. and Amazon.com Inc. retreated on concern over earnings. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 0.9 percent to 1,287.37 at 11:08 a.m. in New York. The dollar advanced against the euro for the first time in nine days, strengthening to $1.3634 per euro from 1.3734 yesterday.

For all of 2010, the world's largest economy expanded 2.9 percent, the most in five years, after shrinking 2.6 percent in 2009. The volume of all goods and services produced rose to $13.38 trillion, for the first time surpassing the pre-recession peak reached in the fourth quarter of 2007.

'Stronger Every Day'

"The environment continues to improve," GE Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Immelt said on a Jan. 21 conference call. "The economy can get a little bit stronger every day."

GE this month posted its third straight quarter of profit growth, beating analysts' estimates, driven by a rebound in its finance unit, health-care and transportation divisions.

A separate report today showed consumer confidence fell less than expected in January, a signal the biggest part of the economy may extend the gains in spending.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan final index of consumer sentiment decreased to 74.2 from 74.5 in December. The median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey called for a reading of 73.3, up from a preliminary figure of 72.7 issued earlier this month.

A 10 percent gain in the S&P 500 in the fourth quarter boosted household wealth and confidence. The government's extension last month of Bush-era tax cuts, renewal of emergency jobless benefits and cuts to payroll taxes prompted economists such as Bruce Kasman at JPMorgan Chase & Co. in New York to raise forecasts for 2011.

Consumer Spending

Household purchases, about 70 percent of the economy, rose at a 4.4 percent pace last quarter, the most since the first three months of 2006. The increase added 3 percentage points to growth.

Retailers' holiday sales jumped 5.5 percent for the best performance in five years, data from MasterCard Advisors' SpendingPulse showed last month, as customers snapped up jewelry and clothing at stores like Macy's Inc. and Tiffany & Co.

Apple posted record quarterly sales as customers snapped up 7.33 million iPad tablet computers in the first holiday season for the device, the company said last week.

As spending picks up, Ford is among companies planning to increase payrolls this year, pointing to gains in employment that may further underpin the recovery. The company today said fourth-quarter profit fell 79 percent as its European operations reported an unexpected loss.

Hiring Plans

The Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker plans to hire more than 7,000 workers in the next two years, including engineers with expertise in battery-powered cars, Mark Truby, a company spokesman, said in an interview in Detroit on Jan. 10.

Still, Fed policy makers indicated this week that growth isn't strong enough to reduce the jobless rate as fast as they would like, opting to maintain plans to pump $600 billion into the financial system through June. Unemployment has been stuck at 9.4 percent or higher since the recession ended in June 2009.

"The terrible issues of the last two years have been somewhat contained," Indra Nooyi, chief executive officer of PepsiCo. Inc, said in an interview with Bloomberg Television today at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. "But GDP recovery alone doesn't mean we have started to climb out of the recession. We have to address the unemployment."

The Fed's preferred price gauge, which is tied to consumer spending and strips out food and energy costs, climbed at a 0.4 percent annual pace, the smallest gain in data going back to 1959.

Trade Deficit Narrows

The economy also got a lift from a narrowing trade deficit as exports climbed, which added 3.4 points to growth last quarter, the most since 1980.

The Obama administration highlighted export deals with China worth $45 billion during talks with visiting President Hu Jintao last week, including purchases of GE locomotives.

Tax measures allowing firms to depreciate 100 percent of capital expenditures over the course of 2011 will also help sustain demand for equipment, which has fueled the factory-led recovery that began in June 2009.

Inventories last quarter were stocked at a $7.2 billion pace, down from a $121.4 billion rate in the third quarter. The slowdown subtracted 3.7 points from growth, the most since 1988. Leaner stockpiles may help set the stage for faster growth in the first half of this year.

"The mix of growth in the fourth quarter was very healthy, strong consumption and not much in inventories, and that implies production will likely be stronger than expected going forward," said Chris Low, chief economist at FTN Financial in New York.

Does faith healing work?

In my opinion be it so humble!

We might wonder whether faith healing works. We know that good medicine works and knowledge works and sciences works, none always, and all, conditionally.

The simple answer is yes faith works, but not on demand, and conditionally, and only for some things, and these are not always the ones that kill you.

Faith healing is a conditional form of healing and is not based on proven medicine. Many people say it's crap, and with good reason since it is not a panacea. Nothing really is.

Faith healing requires faith both in the healer and the person wanting to be healed. That faith is that where two people are gathered together in God's name so shall he be there as well! It is the presence of the Almighty that is the condition that needs to be fulfilled. Without God's presence there is another form of healing taking place.

What does wikipedia say?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faith_healing

Alternatively, there is a stronger definition with that of people who rely totally on faith. That is not very wise! In even the simplest of cases God is not like a physician that can be relied on because you want to rely on God. It does not seem to make sense to assume such a relationship between one and God. It may happen, but it cannot be assumed in practice or in theory. Hoping is not the answer. You might think of others as working on behalf of God to further your healing. Have faith in your experts or yourself.

http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Faith_healing

Who makes a big claim for getting it right with a mix of faith and un-common sense? Answer = Dr. Lorraine Day.

Dr. Lorraine Day's Personal, Official Web Site - Her Amazing Recovery from Cancer.

Someone writes:

http://www.drdayproducts.com/

What do I think?

I would be just as quacky / whacky as Dr. Lorraine Day.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorraine_Day

In my view, there are three main sources to every problem that predominate before the many other minor sources come into play. Seemingly, minor things can kill you as the series A Thousand Ways to Die shows us.

However, tackle the three main sources of a problem and you get pretty far down the road to solving the problem.

Dr Day is absolutely right to focus on mental attitude and the immune system. She is extraordinarily helpful on the road towards a solution to many illnesses.

Faith is a big part of mental attitude and your immune system and health relies on appropriate mental attitude. Obviously, if you are hit by an infectious disease, your mental attitude may not keep you well or even alive, but it will help in the process of dying compared to a situation where you had a bad mental attitude.

Many of us are blessed with a history of good fortune and this history comes because our parents were also helpful in our history. We are given many things and should be grateful for receiving them. Some are associated with good health.

For me, the question is whether one can up the odds of surviving health issues. Possessing a good attitude and pursuing independent lines of research may be all it takes. Others need specialists to help them being less fortunate and being in the wrong environment.

Your cell phone may be your worst enemy in the future because you chose to ignore warnings now! Don't take your good health for granted. Go out there and seek good health by asking questions.

It may be that a little faith in a higher power will heal your greatest health issues, if not your attitude towards God and being blessed with the only life you will ever remember!

The healing love of God! What a mystery even in this day and age? See it happen in your life!

I want all my readers to view this YouTube video. Yes, there are many streams that we do not understand, and the potential for God's stream of love must come as one of those we can't ignore whatever name we give it, or from whatever road we have travelled, or whatever views we may hold!

Here's Michael: Over Christmas I was able to spend some time editing some of the video work that I have recorded and sent out one on the Healing Love of God to You Tube. I am sure that as we see God healing people it encourages us to push further in our own prayers. Also as we see people testify of their healing and how God worked in them we realize what an important part testimony is in keeping the healing and also passing the vision on that God heals even in diseases which a person may have lived with for twenty years. This is very important especially in cultures which have become comfortable with a concept of a passive God. A God that is doing wonderful works in far off places but not healing my neighbors next door. We know God is very powerful and able to do far more than we can possibly imagine and it is vital that we hold that in our hearts as we pray for healing. Here is the site for the video if you have not seen it yet, please pass it on to anyone who it might encourage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIrUh-Qw1eo

To that end I have been given a larger vision to use videography to communicate what God is doing in this city through as many different expressions of Christianity there are. I am also praying for another person who has this on their hearts to work with me in this arena. This year is going to see big steps forward as we start to build momentum to pooling the different resources across Bristol to pray for a revival here. Get the overall policy mix right and you are the winners

This is a time to be skeptical or even cynical!

Right now authorities have pumped up the liquidity of the system to the point where only politics keeps them pumping more.

Left and right will make different choices of how to redistribute incomes at this point and keep their interests at the forefront. The battle will be acrimonious because the potential losses are very real. In the end the poorest will suffer the most as they do not have the knowhow to compete other than gambling.

Poor people, the old and the less fortunate will, yes will gamble if they don't know what to do. And, yes there are many scoundrels willing to take those bets to pay for over investment in gambling apparatus of the nation.

Make no mistake, the real disease in America is addiction and the processes of addiction which are included as normal behaviour, risk taking and investing. Rather than the work ethic America has the problem of food chain addiction, and it's not going away soon!

An example of one form of approach, but you should see that it's a loaded mix of policies and not my own..

Signs of an economic problem when your economy looks like a gambling joint with all the trimmings of free coffee and loans to get you sucked into the mood for taking a risk with other peoples hard earned savings.

How not to manage your monetary policy! Exclude those items from your price index so you don't worry about the inflation and the next bubble you are creating. Let the banks go in for another merger spree so as to get those share values up and keep the joint tickin along. The hall is rockin so let the money supply get out of hand. You need that house value to get up there instead of really saving. Let the government pay for the interest on my mortgage....

There are real signs of a deep economic problem in America when it's economy looks like a gambling joint with all the trimmings of free coffee and loans to get you sucked into the mood for taking a risk with other peoples hard earned savings.

Get people to gamble and work till they drop then tell them you are not going to give them a decent pension and you will be raising their health costs because that too has become a lottery.

US monetary policy now supports borrowing to increase the money supply and over reaches of the effective demand for speculation in commodities and shares world wide. This is the new Keynesian formula combined with the old Friedmanite economics of low inflation. Just keep your eyes closed, man alive!

It's the way to make money on the stock market, but is it what we want to stimulate the economy? Seems more of a way to transfer wealth than earn income. Gambling, possibly, promoted by government and it's low interest rates. Inflate share prices and property prices, but keep them out of the price index please.....

Arab world unrest continues ....

Lots of bottled up frustration explode onto the streets as ordinary people unleash their frustration at being left behind economically! Is there more to it? Are more women among those that want to be heard?

Getting calcium in those bones the proper way! Calcium and Vitamin D - Who Needs It, and How Much - NYTimes.com

Too much supplements with vit D are not the answer for most people. I have heard that a little weigh lifting with salmon sandwiches for lunch. Take weights in your teen school years to get muscles enough to carry those suitcases on holiday or to move house! Helps in love! Milk consumption is not what it used to be when all those kids grew so tall and strong! Too much sitting is obviously the key to bad health as people fill their brains rather than emptying the toxins from their systems by walking and having a good .....

The Internet User's Best Kept Secret

Sketches from scratches is a provocative blogspot that has grown out of the Wuh Lax experience. It is eclectic, which means that it might consider just about anything from the simple to the extremely difficult. A scratch can be something that is troubling me or a short line on paper. From a scratch comes a verbal sketch or image sketch of the issue or subject. Other sites have other stuff that should really be of interest to the broad reader. I try to develop themes, but variety often comes before depth. ... more!
