My thanks to Joseph, who points out that a very reasonable possible source of LED light bulbs is Don's Green Store, who ship. Don's place tells us that one should be also aware that fluorescent bulbs may contain mercury, and as a consequence they may need greater care when disposing.
LED bulbs on the market are not yet displacing fluorescent, but the writing on the wall is for that to happen eventually for directional lighting as the gradually improving technology makes them preferable on many counts.
Similarly, when disposing of ordinary batteries, don't put them in the regular waste as they may also contain toxic substances. Its best to ask your local experts where to dispose of batteries even the ordinary ones. I now have a separate trash container for batteries of all kinds, fluorescent bulbs and printer inks. Think about it?
