EBN - Bolaji Ojo - Stop Gorging on China

What drives the escape to China other than reduced costs and a monster size potential market. China has it all, a possibility of obtaining economies of scale to reduce costs and maximizing revenue, as well as labour costs that are a magnet to manufacturers. The population is well educated as well and business oriented! So what's the problem and what's the solution.

Where is cellular technology and WIFI going?

You tell me!

With the advent of the iPad and it's me-too followers using me-too operating systems and me-too retail technologies, we see Apple leading the way. That's not surprising given that it takes several generations to get a technology economy on the move. Well, we are abbot to see loft off.

When I am highly emotional, I come out with profound comments such as solid state technologies will take over and revolutionize the electronics industry once more. My approach is always very long term and my analysis focuses on the core of technologies which were the subject matter of my university readings many decades ago.

I was greatly disappointed by Microsoft's pathetic efforts over the past thirty years even though they came to spawn and dominate the industry and leave IBM in the dust. Will Apple also disappoint. I think not given what I know about the philosophy of the company and it's depth of understanding about where people and user groups are driving the industry.

Our world is dominated by the fear of terrorism, which like the need to spend money on defense is very harmful to consumer product development over the longer term. Sure technology companies will design products to fight terrorism, but much of what we could see will be deferred until more secure times.

Obviously, we are witnessing a volume upscaling of information exchange though rather belatedly as we allow consumers to be suckered into buying obsolete technologies. That's ok, since there is a need to pace technology innovation and development in order to string out employment opportunity over time. Going slower helps give slower communities jobs. By obsolete, I would include the plethora of USB 2 technologies currently finding sales.

We are just not geared up to the notion of USB 3 and it's multiplicative effect on information exchange volumes. More information to hide terrorist messages being exchanged and reason enough to slow down the pace of technology revolution somewhat so that security agencies can catch up. We don't want to move too fast.

That raises the question, however, that we may be playing into a economic game in which size of firm and end market really does matter, but speed of development and spawning rates for new divisions matters even more. Why pick all the winners when you can play hopscotch? That's the Japanese business expansion strategy of yore which seems not so much in evidence now, but which is probably very much in effect. Don't try to do all the technologies. Just pick those that you know will produce economies of scale. Get in there early by all means, but recognize that rate of obsolescence is accelerating.

So we see the French trying to sell USB 3 devices in Paris while me-tooers elsewhere are not in evidence. So how is this an opportunity for the next generation of Apply light weigh fully incoblock products. Put a terabyte memory into a device instead of gigabyte and ram up production to grab the deflation opportunities in the market and what have you. You have a new WIFI demand making existing devices operating on 3G and USB 2 very much obsolete. So watch memory get rammed up several more notches to takes right into the video age. There is so much to do!

The Market Economy and then there is the Trader Economy - Manachean Devil or Just Intelligent Opponent

Some activities are ideal for specific personalities. Human personality can define what you are good at based on how you have self selected your specialisation. The problem is that many money making activities require personality, energy, resilience, intelligence, adaptability, resourcefulness, endurance, canniness, and persistence. Markets that involve strategy are much too difficult for modelling as yet though the best brains have tried.

A World Without Work

Rick Bookstaber theorises about the influence of economies of scale in technology and the implications of falling costs on consumption.

Bookstaber's discussion is pretty close to what What we are seeing and not so far off the mark. It would be interesting to put his hypothesis in a more general economic model. He, nevertheless, has pulled out two of the more fascinating influences operating within our modern economies. Power to him:

http://www.businessinsider.com/secular-deflation-2010-11

A similar model results in the deflation of the housing market which receives the benefit of over expansion of the money supply, but this leads to deflation as there is insufficient consumption demand for the second cycle of demand that results from too much money. The inflation of too much money can offset the deflation of technology providing the money supply growth is in balance for long term consumption capacity, normally seen as the long term income or permanent income as per Milton Friedman. This can explain why a well designed combination Keynesian, Schumpeterian and Friedman's models will work together but leave one out and none will work. All three together provide a reasonable framework of analysis as first suggested in the 1930's bynthe economist and mathematician, Professor Moore.

Why Humans Lost Their Fur

Have you ever wondered why humans have so little fur? If you can think of the reason, you might be able to look back in time to our collective past.

My feeling is that it was because for much of our history, we lived in the dark.

The Strengths of the American Economy and the Ebb and Flow of Economic Change

It's easy to say that current economic policies of America may weaken it's competitive position as a producer of goods, but it would be wrong to say the economy is weak. My comments are generally that economies with weak exchange rates tend to slacken their competitive edge on the productivity side as measured by value of output per worker. It's too easy to develop behind a wall of price protectionism that does little to spur productivity or innovation. Stagnant product improvement because of price weakness does nothing to train the next stage of consumption. America paid the price of a weak exchange rate with the crises of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The Texas banking crisis was also a consequence of loosening the shoelace of competition by making money to easy to come by. Thus, weak monetary policy and weak exchange rates do not auger well for employment over the longer term as a country's manufacturing base ups and leaves when the going gets tough again. Witness American industry migration to China and India.

China does not do itself any long term favors by a weak exchange rate since this reduces the pressure in China to innovate. Sooner than expected there is overcapacity. Money driven inflation will come, wages and incomes go up, interest rates rise, money harder to come by, and Chinese firms will not be that competitive. A large internal market will be China's salvation, but it needs competitive forces to really spur it on as the public sector demands more and more.

Our reality is that not only do products themselves need to incorporate more and more price insensitive aspects to maintain or increase market size, qualitative improvement by specification of more and more market branches with derivation of scale economies. But also, the mix of products needs to be further fine tuned and technologically designed to match income growth or decline. The strength of America is it's huge internal market. This is a lesson China needs to take on board.

Spot On - Whether You Like it, Shoreditch style projects are What is Needed - but what about Education?

At a time when the UK Prime Minister is raising the ante for students who want to enter the workforce of the next century, he appears to be thinking of creating a technological dynamo in London at Shoreditch. This is great news as the rag trade center of the seventies transforms itself to serve the creative needs of a future London that could take on the creative centers of the giant economies. Yes, get out of banking and rags and get into technologies. Too little thinking too late in my thinking. Too much Gordon Brown and not enough Maggy has lead to poverty and dependency, excessive risk taking, obsession with property, and silly financing.

So much sour thinking that has come out of the previous administration with Gordon Brown giving people what the country really did not have and so much spending we now see as a big waste of money. Rather than give people hope, the Social Democrats had a way of sapping at the roots of the British economy's vitality focusing the country on consumption rather than creative marketing, innovation and new job production in the technology sectors.

As Britain has slipped further down the league tables in technology innovation, it has registered a disappointing growth in real terms when one subtracts all the waste in property. Focusing on beer, gambling, and football the country has caused it's own slump and smashed the world records for dismal performance. The decline was obvious to all but the previous government.

A new effort to redirect the economy is badly needed, but it does not auger well that the potential for progress is being cut off at the knees with the pressure on the Lib Dems to abandon their push for further education and support of tuition at higher levels of achievement in education.

The backbone of long term economic growth is a sound and extensive education system growing from within and the Tories could be making their biggest mistake by not getting behind the push by the Lib Dems to strengthen and encourage the education base that Britain needs desperately.

It will be the students that make the future of Britain, but many will digress into real estate, dependency on large corporations and banking because that is becoming their only hope of ever owning a home. Worse still they might leave for education and employment elsewhere in Europe.

Why reinforce the mistake of Gordon Brown when the coalition government could give the youngsters a solid hope of a bright future.

Cut other stuff and give targeted support to tuition fees. David you should rethink the overall direction of the cuts. Don't work against creativity when that is where employment will come.

What do others think?

The Strangeness of the Chinese Property Bubble ...... a Bubble of Bricks and Mortar

Build and leave empty seems strange and it's consequences may auger in the next financial crisis, one beginning in China! What the Chinese need to understand is the relationship between income an value.

Forget labour theory of value or a money theory of value.

It's the system working smoothly that allows for real success not speculation on future domestic incomes which just may not be realized. It will be interesting to see whether the speculators have their numbers correct or are they behaving according to addictive processes of gambling and unrealistic assumptions of habit persistence in the housing market.

This is communism and capitalism mixed together in a very strange way. More communist than capitalist? No!

Will household balance sheets of future China be strong enough to sustain the value of the property built above sale price, or will too many homes be built and left empty?

The Burden of Poverty from Restructuring Economies in Photographs by Chris Killips

Woooosh wrote:
Nov 11th 2010 10:18 GMT

I think that it is easy to point the finger at politicians and say they are responsible for many of the sad scenes that we witness. To say that Thatcher is in any way responsible for poverty and the misery that impoverishment brings is just opportunist clap trap. More to the point is that we know companies need to be reshaped to survive international competition and we know this produces unemployment of people who cannot be lucky at the time change happens. Those fortunate enough to weather the storms of restructuring economies are richer beyond all imaginings and some would turn around to say thank you. Many scenes in black and white conjure up our understanding that most of us are the lucky ones who have time to ponder photographs rather than pick through rubbish tips in search or morsels. Thatcher was right however to point out that reinforcing success is the best way to combat weakness. The photos of people succeeding should encourage us to take on greater burdens for our friends and neighbors.

I had a look at the following column in the economist and then added the words found above.  Read for yourself.  Do you think it is right to blame those politicians such as Margaret Thatcher that have done so much to restructure weak economies even though it causes pain?  The banking crisis of today would not have happened under Maggy's watch, believe me!

In my view, the decision to restructure an economy that Maggy took is like that one one saying two groups are going to suffer over time and one has to choose which group to spare.  The youth of Britain were spared.  That takes courage and that is what Maggy had despite the consequences.  The route Gordon Brown took us to is much less courageous and damns many more people to poverty and pain.  The youth of Britain have to suffer because of Gordon Brown not being watchful enough and enjoying the housing boom.  The present coalition for all it's courage should be supported despite the sadness of austerity that results from earlier sleepy governance.

The Alarm Bells of Our Failing International Institutions

Watching the English police in the street maintain a semblance of law and order in leading democracies such as London who never fail to preach about the importance of free speech and association, should remind us of how frail the international progress with our international UN institutions of the last fifty years really is. The League of Nations failed several decades before world war. Will we witness the fall of the United Nations and an international disarray that few can imagine?

It's one thing to say that the world wide web and improved communications are a force for peace, but they can also be abused. Who would want to think about how horrible that would be; the rise of a political force determined to put forward a strong program of hard toothed solutions to our present discontent!

No! What we really want is our bumbling democracies to muddle through amid protest and change without those people of a harder bent taking control. But, we are very close tom the tipping point towards that Platonic wheel of political change that predicts chaos.

It's very conceivable that we will fail to introduce a substitute for oil before the stress of a fluid world energy shortage results in serious clashes between the forces for stability and the lack of responsibility that emerges through desperation.

The problem arises because of debt that one generation accumulates and attempts to pass on to the next. When a new generation does not assume the burden of the excesses of a previous generation, the rapid transformations and adjustments needed for stability tend to erode respect and trust in the legal system.

Gradually, the new generation forces the issue seeking an advantage not by democracy but by fierce and by fighting amongst themselves. Bam! you have the instability everyone wants to avoid but few of the previous generation did much to address let alone understand.

It's not good enough that we don't know how to solve our present predicament. The spring is wound tighter and tighter as disagreement between influential parties becomes more fierce. Whoa betide the individuals that come in the middle, the innocents and the weak of the current and new generations who are dragged into a conflict between extremes willing to do more and more at the edge of violence in order to succeed.

Barriers to Market Entry in Modern Situations - Why Interest Rates and Exchange Rates Should Not Matter, but have Created Into the Central Position of Fed Policy

The way to grow jobs is to reduce barriers to market entry by firms creating new jobs. Unfortunately, politics and financial policies put the kibosh on new jobs while bewailing the fact of domestic firms being uncompetitive. Firms don't need the protection of a weak exchange rate since competitive products would be price insensitive. Firms need to make their products more innovative and less price sensitive. Sure America buys rubbish, but that is because firms in America are not innovating sufficiently but relying on protectionism. The reason is complex, but has to do with lack of understanding by money people of what it takes to enter into new markets and create jobs.

Under the present form of financial management under the central banks, policy focusing on letting firms consolidate industry at an accelerating rate and increasing the barriers to entry, misses the point that we are still at war with communism. It's too easy for large firms to use their financial clout to stop innovation by small firms. Rather than creating jobs and grow the economy, the role of the stock market has been to kill capitalism. In the end, we will have less innovation at home and less originating abroad.

If you don't see that you need to put on your research hat. The benign aspects of innovation in creating a future without communism have taken a knock with the failure of authorities to support a genuine competitive system. Without genuine competition and successful market entry, we will become China Inc under Chinese Communism without our hard gained freedoms. That much should be clear!!!! The fed seems to have the idea that always supporting economies of scale somehow helps economic growth and the deficit. What are firms to do with all the liquidity other than use it to curb competition.

The Light of the Matter

In an earlier blog, we noted how strong Suzy Malin felt about the importance of her lighting and natural light in the process of painting and creative art.

Studies show that stores with better lighting might find more customers willing to pay the prices they charge and visit more often.

http://www.miller-mccune.com/business-economics/stores-lighting-influences-perceptions-of-quality-24233/

Light strongly can influence ones perception of the quality of a community setting such as a mall or coffee shop or book store making one more inclined to spend more time there. If communities devoted more time to seeing how light and colour influence their residents and visitors, they could profit.

Article: Modern Art Was CIA 'Weapon'

The Power of Art

It seems improbable, but apparently the CIA supported expressionism as a way to undo communism.  If one saw the art that was produced in the Solviet Union, then the idea that American modern expressionism could undermine Russian art has to be argued very carefully as it is in the following article:

The Most Important Goal of a Central Bank is to Gain the Trust of Reasonable People

I have to wonder whether Mish has justification for what he is saying in a recent blog. When I examined the policy of the Fed some years ago, I assumed that the error of the Fed at that time was due to a lack of basic understanding of the economics of banking and getting the inflation index defined wrongly. Perhaps, my assumption is correct. The other hypothesis could be that of Mish in which the inflationary bubble was engineered.

Alternatively, one could say the governors of Fed and the economists in the banking system were very much asleep at the wheel, poorly trained, had not read enough economic history, inadequate to the task of understanding criminality in banking, non familiar with the process of competitive forces and the merger movement, conducive to unproven technologies in finance or perhaps drunk or intoxicated, lacking in understanding of the economies of scale in banking finance and predisposition to greed.

Maybe, the leadership of George Bush was to blame and it is a story of persistent greed overriding common sense, a form of addiction in which one lies to oneself about the outcome. If one cannot tell lies from truth, then one continues in self deception and takes everyone along.

Whether we like it or not the strategy of the Fed ignores the economic history of inflations following a war financed on excessive debt. Weakening the dollar and keeping interest rates low in an attempt to spur on growth is reading the economics text book written in America, which we should realise by now is incorrect.

We don't like to think there are sinister motives behind the Fed's move, which gambles on a deflationary psychology but our trust is weakening, like that of Mish. When we say that credit demand drives the system we are saying just that. Does the Fed expect another round of credit demand in face of an emerging foreclosure crisis? How do we ever get out of this mess now?

Did Obama Save Capitalism?

Some writers believe that Obama should be given credit for taking a chance that resulted in the saving of the American capitalist way of life, for which, of course, he got what amounts to a kick in the teeth. This is about the same as Churchill received for leading the Brits during the struggle against Hitler.

Well the policies presently in place still have to unfold be they ever so unfair.

There is something in human nature that wants to escape the horror of remembering what things could have been like without the odd leader that takes an uncomfortable stand for us, and the best way is to eliminate the real savior from ones mind. It may be that the person has taken an opposing view to our own and we don't like to be reminded how things would have turned out had we been leader.

There would be too much responsibility owed to one person if we were to thank those to whom we owe so much. As remembrance day nears, we might thank those that fought in the Battle of Britain to which we owe so much.

James McMullen - The Artist - Line by Line Drawing - An Introduction

While working full time in the early 1980s, I created a fun blog (using ATTs primeval internet) which I focused on line art that I did while in Washington DC during my lunch breaks. The pleasure one can derive from drawing is very personal. I used a primitive version of Microsoft PowerPoint to get the material on line and had the PowerPoint presenter display it for this early audience. Other artists have had interesting experiences getting on line, such as James McMullen.

Want to learning how to draw and enjoy the fun of sketching. Have a look at James McMullen's blog and New York Times articles.

America Votes Republicans into Congress

The voters have made their choice and they favoured the Republicans. Now, Congress needs to get to work and sort out that housing headache! It's no good flooding the economy with more money to stimulate growth, but if people pay down debt that helps. One has to wonder whether in such a period of deflation whether paying off a mortgage is an attractive option. No! And, that's the problem.

The not so subtle message the American people may be sending Obama and Congress is that the real work to sort out the economy has not started and what has been done has not gone in the right direction.

Fear of inflation and deflation occurring in different parts of the globe. While America spends more dollars, other countries want to spend less, but are getting caught up in what could become a 1973-76 style world inflation resulting from a flight from dollars and a push to grab energy resources. Many countries have too much liquidity and seek to reduce inflationary risks without encouraging deflationary risks.

The Confusing Arena of Left and Right Wing Politics Which is the Wrong Way to Understand Politics

It's not really an issue of democrat against republican or liberal against conservative or right against left wing. That's what makes modern political dialogue so confusing. We get wrapped up so much in labels that don't tell us very much.

It might be more helpful to understand politics in terms of large and small. Small things often grow to be large things. Children grow to become adults. Our treatment of small and immature things is very different from our treatment of large and mature things. We know that large things have a way of protecting themselves and gaining a handle on situations. Large people tend to have different issues from small people. Large companies have different issues from small ones.

We can also factor in age. If things grow large they then tend to be older. The needs of older entities and people are very different from the needs of younger entities and people. So to understand the position of things, we need to understand their age and size, or at the age and size of the grouping to which they belong.

What we find is that larger and older entities and people tend to have advantages at their peak and then disadvantages when they are over the hump.

Right and left wing reflects interests not of whether radical change is appropriate or not, but what the entity or person belonging to a particular grouping sees as it's interests.

What confuses the politics is that entity age groupings and people age groupings do not match and frequently work at cross purposes. An older company should have things sorted out for it's retirees, but we find that an older company to stay young hires young people who do not want the interests of older staff to be catered to. The mix between old and young causes political conflict.

Similarly, small company interests are very different from large company interests and their politics reflect that. It's too much of a short cut to say that large company interests reflect the interests of older people. The politics of large and small organizations is very different.

The Competitive Inequity that Modern and Traditional Banks Create

Ever wonder why there is unemployment. It is not something to be easy found within the ideas of Keynes General Theory or within the ideas of innovation to be found in Schumpeter. To be sure, it is contained in both the long and short term approaches of these theories, but the fact is that the role of the banking system in both is somewhat misunderstood or just plain lacking.

Put very simply banks, especially large banks enjoy economies of scale. If they want to make money they do preferential lending to big customers. Big customers put more money in more branches mor widespread across the country or globe than small customers. Big customers demand that banks treat them preferentially.

So why is the British Prime Minister surprised that he cannot get big banks to lend to small business?

It should be obvious.

Big banks have both customer small and customer big as customers. Customer small asks the bank for a loan that will take away business from customer big. Bank says no to customer small because it wants the revenue of customer big to continue and figures customer big is the better bet. Banks research their customers competitive positions and get outside advice on business prospects.

If customer small and customer big are bidding for the same government procurement contract, do you think that the bank does not know. Think again because the bank has all the information of customer big and small it needs to decide which it wants to lend to. Customer big deposits in many branches and in key important branches, while customer small banks in a few branches somewhere! When the branch manager of a bank branch assesses customer big, there is a routine and similarly with customer small.

Head Office has the final say and takes two piles of files, one for customer big and one for customer small. Weighing both and taking into account relativities, customer big wins in the mind of the bank.

What happens in the government office is not so very different though it relates to familiarity breeds friendship. The supplier big is more prevalent and has more friends, especially the bank that finances or smoothest it's financial operations. Supplier big is well known and offers fewer head aches. Who would you think will win the government procurement contract? This is not yet eBay!

The Lion's Den and What Business Banks are Really Interested In!

You might have thought that banks were interested in lending to firms for investment in activities that create jobs. No, that's the role of the stock market, angel investors, government schemes, and lions. Banks lend to consumers where they can get a strong handle on the risk. They don't like lending to companies if they cannot get a superb handle on the risk.

Banks lent to the property market because they thought it was risk free. Banks want a return on investment of 35 percent so this limits their choice of risk taking somewhat. If you want 35 percent growth, you will look for three times that before lending at risk. There is not much new activity going on that will produce a growth rate of over 100 percent per annum.

Generally, small firms take a hit before they break even. Banks want the hit to occur very soon and the break even point to be within a short period, the shorter the better.

The truth is that banks are not really suited for lending for innovation. If they lend to an innovating company, it might just put another customer out of business, which is not what they want. Even if that customer banks with another bank, they do not want to put companies out of business.

Capitalistic innovation requires winners and losers so banks are not in the game of innovation.

They want to make loans for working capital after a revenue stream has been well identified and established. Then there is low risk and they act as an insurance lender in the event of a hiccup. The gamble banks take is that the winners will always outnumber the losers and the and bad loans will be very limited. The 35 percent growth on capital is quite sacrosanct and the charges banks impose reflect this need to make profits in excess of interest rates.

The high rates on consumer credit create bad loans, but this does not seem to phase banks, who create a sheltered pattern of approval for new lending that maximizes the return on capital even if it is at the expense of customers. Consumer loans for credit cards are a two stage process of profit taking. Make a profit lending to the lending credit card bank and also make a profit lending as the credit card bank!

Both make a return of greater than 35 percent on capital which is built into their charges. So choose only addicted customers who are so desperate for money that they always maintain an excellent credit record. That this excellent credit record comes from playing the field of lenders is unseen or ignored. Borrowing is a secret addiction and the most common one, ahead of alcohol, and it leads to stress and premature death.

Growth in credit comes from the demand of established customers for working capital be this consumption or investment. This is what banks are interested in.

Fighting Viruses and the Body's Immune System

These days, progress in medical science is the result of thorough research into the mechanisms of disease and the means at hand in the body to fight. We have all suspected that the strengthening of the body's own immune system would be the way of much future medicine. How do we do it, however? It's one thing to take vitamin C which apparently does not work very well, but what are the other options. Science has discovered more secrets about how the body fights it's enemies. You might ask whether it really knows how to identify them.

As the excess production of dollar credit finances growth of production outside America, it will most assuredly help China and India as they bid against each other for more and more of the energy pie.

America Will Help Create a Second Dynamo Economy - India

In the UK, we have been tied to the mistaken notion that America is our strongest economic ally ignoring the fact that Germany is the powerhouse economy that enables the UK to relax over the dismal fiscal performance of Greece and Spain. What America has done in the past decade for Britain no friend would do.

Well, fighting wars in the Middle East boosted British arm sales and gave more control over the status quo of oil suppliers, but one wonders about this alliance of convenience to very large security interests, oil and arms is not the best way to grow an economy any more than banking and home sales.

Now, we are faced with a prospect of seeing India being transformed into a dynamo economy along American designs. The catch is that India will do much better than China over the longer term and it's economic influence will reshape the world economy more assuredly as it competes with China, Europe and The Americas.

More Quantitative Easing Reflects Severity of Long Term Adjustment Needed

One of the great difficulties in designing short term policy such as being unleashed in America is that there is no accurate measure of production potential. This means that capacity is idle, but forecasters have no idea whether or not the idle capacity is a permanent loss to the economy that will have to be corrected through structural changes, job and capital reassignment.

There is the hope, and is a risky hope that by increasing effective demand through government initiatives some of the idle capacity will become active.

The problem is that those who would demand credit for business need to be convinced that they can make a return on their borrowing. In the past decade, one gets the impression, rightly or wrongly that those demanding credit were primarily consumers, construction, speculators, large firms, merger interests, banks taking undue risks, insurance, and home builders.

The big question is who the increase in credit will benefit. If one said terrorists who want credit for arms deals that would cause a bit of worry, but perhaps these are just the very entities that will benefit most from more dollars seeking to make a return.

That the idea of more money in the system can produce jobs is simplistic. What it can do is produce votes for the Republican Party in the short term as these large corporate interests and many profligate consumers realize their dreams out of the Bush Administration's fling with property and a level of overall consumption unsupportable by the manufacturing side of the economy.

Whether, the demand for credit will come from small business is a risk, but even if realized, it will push ahead risky investment in time that could create a weaker base for efficiency in the longer term. Business that finds things easy feeds off an insatiable demand in America for rubbish or unnecessary spending.

That's the issue. A weak dollar does little to spur investment in efficient production in America. That would be too easy. But, it does create credit for foreign manufacturers investing outside America as these dollars filter abroad as the US balance of trade worsens. Suck, suck..

Sketches from scratches is a provocative blogspot that has grown out of the Wuh Lax experience. It is eclectic, which means that it might consider just about anything from the simple to the extremely difficult. A scratch can be something that is troubling me or a short line on paper. From a scratch comes a verbal sketch or image sketch of the issue or subject. Other sites have other stuff that should really be of interest to the broad reader. I try to develop themes, but variety often comes before depth. ... more!
