» Obama: The Conflict Resolution President?

Within every group there are going to be those who opt for war and those that opt for peace.

When 911 occurred, the state of mind in America was such that its leaders, particularly those advising George Bush opted for a war on terror which provoked unrealistic expectations that war could be a solution to more than one problem, but in reality was more like smashing a wasp's nest that now has all all the quiet wasps determined to seek out and permanently destroy those that disturbed its peace, and ordinary people like you and me.

We have the makings of a permanent crisis not only for Europe and America, but for the world as a whole. Very peace loving communities, such as Libya, that were like sleeping lions have been transformed into highly active war machines that invite the West to attack them so that a new generation of warriors can rise up. This is not like the wars of cowboys and indians. By engaging in wars that escalate conflicts, the very peace within America and Europe is threatened. Harm my parents and their ancestors and I will harm you. The world is a multicultural, multiracial, multi-religious mix. This fact is inescapable. We are trapped by history.

Civil strife is traceable to sentiments about ancestral lands and origins. Wars arise from memories such as the relocations of the Tartars. Communities that engage in conflict stimulation will not be the winners in a complex world in which communications travel like lightning and your potential warrior lives next door. Rather than have an American style civil war of father fighting sons and sons fighting each other, we need to end all wars by recognizing the Hobbesian law that only a social contract to end all wars will succeed. We can kill each other, but that solves nothing. Genocides are rarely complete and memories are permanently embedded into the landscape, particularly now.

War is a terrible wasting and endless endless murderous process that saps the life vitality from all those engaged in it. Its consequences most often are a list of new wars many if which are fought silently by generations that know nothing of true peace. Why die prematurely without experiencing joy.

Sadiq Khan vs. Donald Trump - The New York Times

This explodes the mythology about whether Islam is compatible within western communities. Why let a few hot headed extremists dictate what we say and do? Is it the politics of Daesch and Hesbullah against those of Trump? Or, is it the politics of policy and business as usual? Why let violence steal the future agenda? We should quietly deal with the terrorists while protecting our best people, who happen to include a multitude of races, religions and value systems.

MUGWUMP Trump ... Standing for everything and nothing in order to win

MUGWUMP TRUMP ... HOLIER THAN THOU

The rise of Trump helps us decide what our values are. His contradictions on almost every point of policy or attitude rationally allow people of completely opposite views to have overlap with the views of Trump. By having so many views on everything, Trump unites and divides everyone simultaneously. By being opposites, Trump can be absurd. His only goal is winning support and he is absolutely unscrupulous in method. The overlap expands his popularity base. It is however a con artist's trick because Trump occupies the whole of policy space, yes, no and maybe, all at the same time. Its what we in England call mugwump. Trump is Mugwump. In the US, there is a historical precedent for mugwumps ...

Artist Statement:

My water lilies celebrate a chapter of artistic transformation. After more then 30 years of painting almost exclusively in watercolour, the brush has become an extension of my hand and I can picture the end result before beginning. Diving into encaustics challenged me to stay present and ask new questions.

This journey began one morning while paddling my canoe, the Little Tripper. Noticing the sunlight's dance of light and shadow on lily pads, I was struck by their waxy appearance, which inspired the change of medium. Paddling the Tripper is my first ever encaustic. I later happened upon the lily ponds of the Van Dusen Botanical Gardens in Vancouver, conceiving Homage to Monet, Resplendent and Water Lily Ballet in the close up point of view that I love. The game changer was a visit to MOMA - while standing awe-struck before Monet's mural sized triptych, Water Lilies, I felt compelled to work bigger.

In Liz' Lilies, Late September, A Million Answers and Turning Over an Old Leaf I played with texture and depth on a larger scale. Stepping back reveals a landscape of great depth, rich with details inviting close up examination. Close up one realizes that much of the paint is fragmented jewels of colour, 'blobs of wax'.  As I continued to explore the paintings began to become more abstract.  The series is a spiritual journey of how my soul sees the world.

Sketches from scratches is a provocative blogspot that has grown out of the Wuh Lax experience. It is eclectic, which means that it might consider just about anything from the simple to the extremely difficult. A scratch can be something that is troubling me or a short line on paper. From a scratch comes a verbal sketch or image sketch of the issue or subject. Other sites have other stuff that should really be of interest to the broad reader. I try to develop themes, but variety often comes before depth. ... more!
