news.sky.com: IS Still Gaining Ground Despite Airstrikes

So what really is the point? It would seem that we played right into the hands of the terrorists and Russian bombing just takes us closer to potential world conflagration as their bombing now aids ISIS and disturbs Turkey a sleeping pandora's box. Wars of the old flavour just do not work in our favour, so why continue to make terrorism grow and sour what remains of peace potential.

What Is the Free-Market Solution to a Liquidity Trap? Higher Inflation! - Equitable Growth

The problem resides in not examining appropriately the effect of money supply growth on key markets where inflation runs rampant. We have seen recovery in the equity and housing market, but we have not seen the recovery in household balance sheets that would allow for a normal yield curve. Rather, we see the economy sitting in the liquidity trap permanently and the problem building more and more ... will we survive this? probably not, and it is worse than the climate change issue.

I despair that I am the only economist that actually talks about the 'real' problem. the others receive a 'D' including our former governor of the Bank of Canada ...

Mulcair remortgaged home 11 times | Canada | News | Toronto Sun

As an economist, I would be remiss if I did not say that this was very very appropriate and sound financial behaviour. The main purpose of the lowering of interest rates was to increase debt while increasing asset values. Matching the debt load against the increase in value of the asset is very rational and astute behaviour. Not to do it would be very unwise in an economic sense. The real problem was the increase in money supply for supply side economics that do and did not work. Hidden inflation in house prices uncaptured by the consumer price index have led to immiseration growth under recent governments, putting the world economy into the liquidity trap that 'underconsumption' economists have been warning about for centuries. I am surprised by the ignorance shown of economics by Harpers and the Bank of Canada's teams. They lead to a path of under development and backwards economics. Mulcaur seems to understand economics very well for a socialist.

Why the Fed Buried Monetarism by Anatole Kaletsky - Project Syndicate

Trying to understand economic policy and what dictates what should come next is like looking at a black box that should produce gold but instead produces bubble bath froth. It is clear that the Fed lost its understanding of what it was about and that is because too too many American economists were steeped in a nice glossy theory without dept of history that shows the many shades of grey. It would seem the only way to solve the Feds dilemma is to replace all its crazy economists and teach a new crowd how to construct a relevant price index that captures Friedman's original ideas. The American economists deserve a 'D' failure grade because they dud not understand what their professor was saying. So let inflation flip to force interest rates up and your grade falls to an 'F'.

Hmmmm!

Europeans Forget How to Compromise | RealClearWorld

Attitudes are hardening, which makes the date I predicted in 2006 for a major war footing conflagration beginning in 2024 seem all that more likely, but I certainly hope that I am wrong. My forecast was primarily based on the effects of climate change on agricultural production and inability of modern government's to restrain a growing gambling mentality in policy selection along with effects of inflation in land prices and its discontents. None of these issues are been dealt with adequately and apart from Obama most leaderships don't seem to have clue, while he himself is constrained by ignorance and opposition around him ... thwarting needed policy changes on the use of energy, the role of money supply growth and the artificial stock market valuation disjointed from real income growth, and the need to curb hedge funds ..

Why are Harper's Economic Policies an Unmitigated Disaster for Young and New Canadians

Harper's economic policies are in my view an unmitigated disaster over the full run of his term in office. Let me explain because it affects everyone of whatever political persuasion. Its also a direct consequence of George Bush's Economic Legacy in America.

One of the little talked about consequences of the crisis of 2008 is why economies are presently so sluggish, especially those advanced economies such as Canada. My meta analysis comes from years of advising banks and countries on economic issues and examination of what has happened since the financial meltdown and its consequences for Canadians, Brits and Americans. This is country neutral analysis that should be obvious to all, but continues to be an explanation of dynamic forces acting out bad policies in economic management. Its all in the mathematics of how economies work against large segments of their populations.

If you examine a consuming household budget you will see that generally during recessions purchases of large items such as houses and cars are deferred because nominal incomes don't support them. A pick up in the economy occurs when demand for land for housebuilding, housebuilding and homes rises. The pickup should linked in a meaningful way to rises in domestic incomes from salaries, profits and interest. But, what happens when the links are broken. What happens when the value of land bears little or no relationship to the movement of domestic incomes?

Suppose that you are a speculator, condominium builder, high rise constructor, or city home builder and you see the value of your land constant over time. What policies will you urge your central bank to implement? Why does very bad economics result?

What should be obvious to you, but is little talked about?

To be continued ...

President Obama Says GOP Criticism ‘Ridiculous’ | TIME

Interesting reference to the fact of Obama's uncle helping to liberate Buchenwald camp years ago. Having visited the camp several years ago, which is near the very pretty city of Weimar, I wonder at the troops ever finding it. Apparently, the Americans at first when right by to Weimar. The fuller story is interesting. The camp is located in a beautiful forest and well hidden even from locals who would not necessarily know its presence seeing that most of the labour to build and operate the camp's extensive weapons facilities was of captured ally airmen and prisoners of war treated shamelessly to work them to death and torture many to get information about flights etc. the torture rooms looked like dreadful little hovels down dark steel strengthened corridors with no chance for escape. The smoke and smell of burning bodies would be clues, but even these operations were designed to hide the crimes ... One really has to wonder at the morality of the Republicans wasting this opportunity for peace ... as they most certainly will try ...

America as a failed experiment at civilisation and how the British belatedly won the revolutionary war

I tend to think that guns were exciting as a child playing games, and seeing John Wayne fight it out against the horrible natives was obviously a legacy to be maintained within the American shoot em up mentality. But, the advocacy of a gun culture really does mask that America is not very civilized as a community. There is a very real failure of civilising forces to assert what is and should be the right of all American citizens in a country continuously to enjoy life, liberty, and happiness without fear. Unfortunately, the distribution of fire arms is now so rampant in the US within groups that are best described as social misfits or psychologically damaged by stresses of American family or dysfunctional life that there is no real sense in the United States of life, liberty, nor happiness. The myth of happiness in America is almost as great as the myth of the efficacy of capitalism to sort out the needs for jobs, security, and well being. Each generation of Americans sees a new range of authorised weaponry as manufacturers dominate the dialogue and push their lethal goods out the door. This to me is the opposite of civilisation, a form of managed chaos by the arms industry that seriously limits American people and their fuller enjoyment of life, liberty and happiness. The American revolutionary experiment has failed miserably and threatens to spread its distorted sickness about values of peaceful coexistence worldwide. The world would be wise to ignor America's pleas for a distorted view of gun based diplomacy and gun based human rights until it can manage its own house and home, which on average still remain far from happy or civilised. It seems the British really did win the war of independence because America remains forever traumatised and what is obvious to its British neighbours is that the country has no idea of how to maintain a peaceful democracy modelled by the French revolution. Instead a form of tyranny of the powerful remains. By embedding the worst traits of the American failures at life, liberty and happiness, the Americans have deprived themselves of ever as a wholesome community enjoying a full peace and like the knights of old build security castles to live out their lives in fear and self imposed independence. Sure, there will be pockets of civilisation scattered through America, but the sense of universality of civilised community has been subjected to the gun worn by its citizens to protect each other from each other, a form of Hobbsian world without social agreement.

American Odyssey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - Netflix

The connection to Greek debt is only partly explained as US blood money of a corrupt American military industrial security complex to fund terrorists that keep arms money flowing back to the States. Theme is that corrupt American security firms create massive debt in Greece that the IMF writes off as blood money. What we must ask is the truth? Wall St. Helped Greece to Mask Debt Fueling Europe’s Crisis - NYTimes.com

Greece and what former IMF Director DSK regards as the way forward

DSK is back and now he us advising Cuba.

I think everyone has to climb down on Greece as DSK recommends.

One has to feel sorry for the Europeans who got into all this mess because of American bankers and their immoral policies, condoned as acceptable competitive practices in the wars between international banks. These have replaced bullets and explosives, but are just as dangerous. Problem is that they are not well researched and I am not being paid £200k to do that research

In my view, it is American banks that need the hair cut. Young bankers in Europe were stupid / ignorant enough not to understand how exchange rates move constantly and that interest swaps on doubtful property assets are a fools game.

Governments bail out the banks and hand the weakest in their economies the bills of indenture. Its a bit like slavery, but legal and the bakers support the con ...

In addition, the likes of the Glasers and the Kochs still mess everyone up ...

M A R C   E L L I S O N    |    Data- & Photojournalist » On War’s Centrifugality: Paul Watson

Doug Bonesteel,

It would seem that you and Paul have some major things in common. Principles .. Intelligences .. Convictions .. A hatred of bullying .. And a high disregard for foolish decisions.

Don't let the misguided bullies get you down. Within a playpen of missing smarts and brights, you really shine.

If you ever want to meet to explain your frustrations to sympathetic ears, let me know.

I am myself am not prepared to let bullies push me around on issues where corruption is the order of the day or the economics and environment are sacrificed. My memory will be extremely long, my street smarts, and my wits exercised as long as my brain willingly functions.

Thanks,

Arthur

Global Warming, Greece, and International Violence | Evaggelos Vallianatos

Help Greece build a solar future.

Canada should mount a major effort and organised advanced economies a la Lester Pearson to channel surplus funds to assist Southern Europe get rid of its dependence on fossil fuels. Alberta should close down its oil industry and begin invest in environment friendly energy technologies where there is a long term economic future. Justin Trudeau would seem to be the only Canadian capable of such forward thinking leadership, like his father.

Building island sea barriers using its surplus sulphur and limestone from Canada would be a great start to helping countries that will otherwise be flooded. Why do these enormous poisonous mounds of yellow chemical sit unused when they could be of so much value fighting the effects of climate change?

Does government have to do everything? Where is the forward looking Canadian private sector that Harperism has created, ha ha ha ha!?

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Paul Watson resigns from Toronto Star - Toronto - CBC News

Unbelievable? Are we already a dictatorship? Where is this leading Canada? Obviously, we desperately need new honest leadership. Let the corruption stop forthwith. What negative advertising will begin for this whistleblower?

Pulitzer-winning journalist Paul Watson quits Toronto Star over ‘refusal to publish’ story on Franklin expedition | National Post

One suspects that the Toronto Star is not an honest newspaper anymore. It stands increasingly naked in its biased writing without the likes of a Pierre Berton. Is democracy in Canada dead? Shows existing budget of reporting critical of the government's heavy handedness needs to be increased. Is Ontario's failure to attract manufacturing etc. due to bad governance in Ottawa arising from cutbacks over the last decade. Its obvious there is a lack of leadership qualities in Steven Harper and to compare him to the other party leaders shows the enormous deficit in the Conservative platforms and leadership. All the negative conservative advertising on Youtube is really getting to me.

If you think your local sewerage system is adequate ?

From Wikipedia:

Glyphosate (N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine) is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide used to kill weeds, especially annual broadleaf weeds and grasses known to compete with commercial crops grown around the globe. It was discovered to be an herbicide by Monsanto chemist John E. Franz in 1970.[3] Monsanto brought it to market in the 1970s under the trade name Roundup and Monsanto's last commercially relevant United States patent expired in 2000.

Glyphosate was quickly adopted by farmers, even more so when Monsanto introduced glyphosate-resistant crops, enabling farmers to kill weeds without killing their crops. In 2007, glyphosate was the most used herbicide in the United States agricultural sector, with 180 to 185 million pounds (82,000 to 84,000 tonnes) applied, and the second-most used in home and garden market where users applied 5 to 8 million pounds (2,300 to 3,600 tonnes); in addition, industry, commerce, and government applied 13 to 15 million pounds (5,900 to 6,800 tonnes).[4] With its heavy use in agriculture, weed resistance to glyphosate is a growing problem. While glyphosate and formulations such as Roundup have been approved by regulatory bodies worldwide and are widely used, concerns about their effects on humans and the environment persist.[5]

Glyphosate's mode of action is to inhibit a plant enzyme involved in the synthesis of the aromatic amino acidstyrosinetryptophan, and phenylalanine. It is absorbed through foliage, and minimally through roots,[6][7][8] and translocated to growing points. Because of this mode of action, it is only effective on actively growing plants; it is not effective as a pre-emergence herbicide. Some crops have been genetically engineered to be resistant to glyphosate (i.e., Roundup Ready, also created by Monsanto Company). Such crops allow farmers to use glyphosate as a postemergence herbicide against both broadleaf and cereal weeds, but the development of similar resistance in some weed species is emerging as a costly problem. Roundup Ready soybean was the first Roundup Ready crop.

Many regulatory and scholarly reviews have evaluated the relative toxicity of glyphosate as an herbicide. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment published a toxicology review in 2013, which found that "the available data is contradictory and far from being convincing" with regard to correlations between exposure to glyphosate formulations and risk of various cancers, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL).[9] A meta-analysis published in 2014 identified an increased risk of NHL in workers exposed to glyphosate formulations.[10] In March 2015 the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer published a summary of its forthcoming monograph on glyphosate, and classified it as "probably carcinogenic in humans" (category 2A) based on epidemiological studies, animal studies, and in vitro studies.[5][11][12]

Sketches from scratches is a provocative blogspot that has grown out of the Wuh Lax experience. It is eclectic, which means that it might consider just about anything from the simple to the extremely difficult. A scratch can be something that is troubling me or a short line on paper. From a scratch comes a verbal sketch or image sketch of the issue or subject. Other sites have other stuff that should really be of interest to the broad reader. I try to develop themes, but variety often comes before depth. ... more!
