Penny Auction Websites are a Lot of Work, with Avalanche and Tipping points to understand?
Most buyers don't have the time and skills needed to get the bargains seemingly offered on penny auction websites.
First you buy bids.
A single bid can cost over fifty cents.
One bid counts for one cent on the price the penny auction website price. That's possibly why they are called penny auctions and not because you can really buy stuff for pennies. The revenue going to the seller is a big multiple of the penny price and probably over 50 times.
So you have to do some math and what seems cheap may be 50 times or more as expensive. But you are not the only one placing bids and really odd things can happen so have your psychology text next to you. Bystander effects occur when others stand by waiting for you to exhaust your 'little' pile of bids. Some people will have major piles.
After your bid you wait while others get a chance to bid, even at the closing se one's when all the fun begins. You try to minimize your number of bids, but what if the bidding ends as the number of bidders visible increases exponentially. Some lucky guy wins by surprise to everyone who thought the game was unending!
It's a perverse bystander psychology that operates to run the numbers higher and higher until the inevitable point when people give up, not because they are far from winning, but because they are extremely close. This is the tipping point to the end of the contest!
The sites show you the math and they give you an out which is to just pay their asking price for your item and credit your bids at the sum of the cost price of the bids.
If you want to bid for something pricey like a camera or iPad, you will find it is very hard work to get it.
You may make a small number if bids, but you will probably have acquired skills with tedious effort akin to playing a complex computer game!
All the warnings needed are posted, but it's not for those that are not used to doing probability math!
Try a hypergeometric statistical theorem and add in bystander psychology along with the difficult mathematics of avalanches and you might win consistently.

It's An Insurrection Not a Riot!
Galbraith explained the moment and you will understand. Churchill and Keynes understood the moment. To understand, you need to have sought deeper than the conventional truth! The stress poor people are experiencing is beyond their ability to cope. We are forcing people into a mold that they are not capable of sharing.
It is the seeds of war that we are sowing so efficiently by not taking notice. We are so interconnected that it is unbelievable the shared sorrow we may be forced to experience.
History repeats within a new frame and we are experiencing a history repeating, but the violence could be unbelievable and we could be just as unprepared as before the first great war?
Prepare to be shocked by the truth!

The Economics of Budgetary Finance
1. A Lesson in linkages between Economic Growth and Balance Sheet Management
While it's important to balance budgets and eliminate debt to make way for growth, it's possible for well meaning writers to totally misunderstand economics. The problem is that if one is concerned about the numbers of budgets and individual debts, one would worry about how to get them in balance. The point of getting macro economic balance is that it may aid in getting microeconomic balance. What if the achievement of macroeconomic balance simply puts off the day of microeconomic balance?
It's important for economic growth and development to maximize what's good for effective balance sheet management over the long term for the greatest number if households and businesses, not just a lucky few with economies of scale.
It is important to maximize balanced budgets generally if conservative capitalism is to survive and be sustainable. The other direction is straight towards dictatorial socialism based on economies of scale, or the Monsanto effect on growth and income distribution.
2. Purposeful Design of Policy to Maximize Sustainable Budgetary Balance
The real issue is whether a given economic policy can maximize the number of households and businesses that are in sustainable balance. Achieving macro economic balance does not achieve provide an automatic strategy to maximize sustainable economic balance in numerical terms. For that very reason economies, such as that of the United States grow to favor only those entities that can achieve economies of scale leaving behind the average household and business.
3. Sustainability bridges scale and distribution.
To have maximum economy growth and development one needs to maximize participation, cooperation and competition simultaneously. The distribution of positive budgetary balance needs to be achieved at small, average and large scales. It's not good enough for large scale operations to succeed while small one's falter. It's desirable to optimize the distribution of budgets achieving balance over the longer term. This means households of all varieties need to achieve balance.
4. The Arts, Sciences and Education within Businesses and Households need to be optimized
We can achieve faster rates of growth through education, but those educated need to be able to achieve balanced budgets.
Good health promotes growth and helps to maximize the period over which budgets of all kinds may be balanced!
Enough said for now!

Boehner: ‘A Lot’ Of Republicans Want To Force Default, Create ‘Enough Chaos’ To Pass Balanced Budget Amendment | ThinkProgress
This is not America, it's a zoo manufactured by a mistaken attitudes of crazy people like Palin of Alaska and who knows what depressed minds are out there plotting horrible futures for America. It is a war of a group of activist right winged politicians towards the plight of less fortunate people.
It makes Rupert Murdoch seem angelic in comparison, except that the names of the right wing Americans involved are so very forgettable. They are to be denied power because they abuse it.
What happens in America affects us all, and when we see the emptiness of the political debate going on there, we can only hope it does not destroy the rest of the world because it really is destructive of America.

How The Government Screws Over Savers
Unfortunately, it is the one sector that should pay it's way and if it can't the rest of the economy suffers. If the market has any role at all it is in seeing that the core housing sector can be self sustaining without government support in the form of interest tax rebates, low interest rates and spending above a sustainable rate linked to migration and demographics.
What Bush did was make the 1980s Texas mistake for the whole country encouraging land speculation and excessive growth in the housing sector. That pushed up housing prices and has as we are seeing reduced overall housing and industrial growth. It was a fool hardy policy and unsustainable.
The danger is that some idiots may take the situation to a stage beyond repair. If taxes don't rise then interest rates will.... My prediction!

Dan Loeb Blasts Obama's Leadership In Second Quarter Investor Letter
Obama! Well, perhaps one has to redefine leadership to include making choices that don't continue business as usual. President Obama leads in a very different way from Bush in that he asks people to consider Americans first, and not the profit margin.
Investors have a habit of migrating their money to places like China.
Had Bush been less keen to push forward a political agenda that really divided the rich from the poor, we / the world would not be in such a mess! If it's the blame game then look to past leadership!
