Scientist maps supercluster of galaxies, names it Laniakea : University of Hawaiʻi System News

"The Milky Way resides in the outskirts of one such supercluster, whose extent has for the first time been carefully mapped using these new techniques. This Laniakea Supercluster is 500 million light-years in diameter and contains the mass of 1017 (a hundred quadrillion) suns in 100,000 galaxies."

And, that number is probably going to make you feel good because even one quadrillion planets like earth is a huge number.

Why are we not exploring the galaxies? Too busy squabbling with Russian criminals?

Ukraine truce takes hold as West lines up Russia sanctions

"But highly sceptical Western leaders nonetheless decided to punish Russian President Vladimir Putin for his efforts in supporting the rebels by beefing up sanctions on Russia's most crucial state firms.

"The only reason that we're seeing this ceasefire at this moment is because of both the sanctions that have already been applied and the threat of further sanctions," US President Barack Obama claimed."

This is a war game, not chess. It is thus much more difficult....

ISIS Ultra-extremists with EU Passports Pose Threat.

"WASHINGTON, USA - Islamic State extremists fighting in Iraq and Syria pose an "immediate" threat to Europe as a significant number carried European passports, top US intelligence officials said Friday, September 5.

The danger presented by jihadists potentially returning to the West to carry out attacks has prompted more cooperation between US and European intelligence agencies in a bid to track terror suspects, the officials said."

A Social History of Tennis in Britain .. Robert J. Lake:

This is my son Rob's effort to explain issues affecting the overall structure of tennis in the UK and the performance of those gaining access to clubs where excellence was achieved. I can relate directly to Rob's discussion having chosen to live in Wimbledon in order to gain access to the venues of the game. Coming from Ontario, I was impressed how easy it was for me to join a good social club, Wimbledon Westside, and how much access players had to the Wimbledon Club, down the hill. At Westside, tennis was very much a social activity being one of a group and very different from the clubs I frequented in Montreal and Toronto where the emphasis was always on winning within a style of acceptable play. It was, decidedly expensive. In Longueuil, I was able to play for free on clay courts against players that enjoyed a style of game that was not a winning game. It was tough, fast and aggressive, low, hard, and extremely stylish. One fell in love with the game style and really enjoyed playing just those players who knew the style. There was no social divide. I played always against French speakers in a town 98 percent French speaking. Competitions were arranged across Canada and players from the Longueuil Club would play in Chicago as well. What mattered was achieving a level of the accepted style of play that could win matches. This was extremely difficult. Since that time, I have not seen the same level of stylish enjoyable play, just games that pit player against player in order to win at any cost. Style is not now part of that equation and more is the pity. Wimbledon is known for its lawn tennis, but there was access to table tennis and top British players. On my attempt, I was told I won if I scored one point. Ouch, my match was against Britain's top player, who taught me humility if nothing else.

Researchers demonstrate direct brain-to-brain communication in human subjects

"We wanted to find out if one could communicate directly between two people by reading out the brain activity from one person and injecting brain activity into the second person, and do so across great physical distances by leveraging existing communication pathways," explains coauthor Alvaro Pascual-Leone, MD, PhD, Director of the Berenson-Allen Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. "One such pathway is, of course, the internet, so our question became, 'Could we develop an experiment that would bypass the talking or typing part of internet and establish direct brain-to-brain communication between subjects located far away from each other in India and France ?'"

Nick Clegg, equality of opportunity and totalitarianism | Institute of Economic Affairs

Is IS the real enemy or The Slavic Union or inequality or totalitarianism. How sophisticated are our present leaders in distinguishing the threats to Canadians and Canada's interests....

"It is often argued by proponents of free markets – especially within the UK Conservative Party – that we should not pursue equality of outcomes but, instead, pursue equality of opportunity. Indeed, that was the argument of at least one of my fellow panellists, Matt Ridley and Norman Lamont, in the recent Bloomberg debate on inequality. However, equality of opportunity is undesirable in theory and its pursuit would lead to totalitarianism in practice.

Those who seek equality of opportunity often wish to create a meritocracy – again, a rallying cry for many Conservatives and some other supporters of a free market. Outcomes, it is argued, should be determined by talent and hard work. There is no apparent objection to one person earning more than another as long as differences arise from talent or hard work."

Such is the political economy of a leading British Liberal, Nick Clegg.

What are the issues?

One can imagine an economy managed like an army with equal opportunity given to all soldiers/salaried people. Those that excel become officers, but they have responsibilities to maintain the system. Totalitarianism arises as in Russia when the soldiers/officers are rewarded disproportionately, given rights over life and death of soldiers and non-soldiers, entered as candidates to the most corrupt elites in the World, denied access to information that might disengage loyalty to the system. So what do we end up with in a world of equal opportunity. Is it a New Russian totalitarian system? Is it a form of Slavic Union State, a resurrection of white supremacy?

How can we preserve the peace.

As we understand it, Putin is arguing that there are Fascists in the Ukraine who want to attack Russians. The reality is, however, that the Fascist movement is The Slavic Union, and it is rapidly gaining strength in Russia. It is a racist movement calling for the racial purity of the so-called slavic region. The Slavic Union has a flag that looks very much like the Swastika. Targets of the Slavic Union are all non-slavic people, etc? It is well funded?

Also, we have the IS and all those who wish to cleanse the world of infidels.

These factors make any existing notion of equal opportunity debatable, but what is the alternative?

He acquires beaches, harbours, gaming joints, super sport centres, and holiday resorts to addict others, but  is he fooling his own subconscious? He is.... trapping himself in his own deceptive logic net!

NATO on Russia's border: a check, not a threat - CSMonitor.com

"If the simmering Ukraine-Russia war were simply a zero-sum game, Russia would now be losing another point. At a meeting next week, NATO is expected to back a plan to move its forces very close to the Russian border in Eastern Europe.

This deployment of NATO troops, which will be done on a rotational basis, would come after previous "losses" for Russia: the exit of a pro-Moscowleader in Kiev, economic sanctions by the West, and a Ukraine now on its way to joining the European Union and not a union with Russia. Moscow has also felt isolated after its missiles were used by Ukrainian separatists to down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17."

Will there be an American investment boom?

"Suppose we could design the next phase of the economic recovery. What would it look like? Here's one pleasing vision: Business investment in plants and equipment — factories, computers, freight cars, software, machine tools — would take the lead. This would boost job creation and productivity (a.k.a. efficiency), enabling companies to increase wages without raising prices. It's a splendid fantasy.

But it just might come true. That's the message from the government's recent second-quarter report on gross domestic product, which measures the economy's growth. Business investment rose at a strong 8.4 percentannual rate after adjusting for inflation. Although the spurt partly reflected a bounce back from a weak first quarter, some economists think it marks a significant turning point."

Retailers not benefiting from Britain’s ‘bike boom’ – but is one really happening? | road.cc

"A 'bike boom' sparked by the success of Britain's top cyclists on the road and track and the staging of major events here may have translated into greater interest in cycling, as well as more journeys being made by bicycle, says the Daily Telegraph– but it isn't translating into growth in sales for many of the country's bike retailers. The full picture may be a bit more complicated than the newspaper's article suggests, however."

Profits Without Prosperity - Harvard Business Review

"Five years after the official end of the Great Recession, corporate profits are high, and the stock market is booming. Yet most Americans are not sharing in the recovery. While the top 0.1% of income recipients—which include most of the highest-ranking corporate executives—reap almost all the income gains, good jobs keep disappearing, and new employment opportunities tend to be insecure and underpaid. Corporate profitability is not translating into widespread economic prosperity."

From a scratch comes a verbal sketch or image sketch of the issue or subject. Other sites have other stuff that should really be of interest to the broad reader.
