If I were Prime Minister: I'd shrink the gap between the highest and lowest paid - Comment - Voices - The Independent
My ambition would be to shrink the differentials between the higher paid and the lower paid so that by the end of my government's first term, it would be something more like 10 to 1 across the country. I'd look into the charity status of any institution in which the pay differentials exceeded that ratio (I would keep a keen eye on loopholes -giving bonuses, special contracts etc) and end their privileges. In relation to corporations and banks, I'd invite economists who are critics of austerity to advise me on how to reform them, such as Paul Krugman, Joseph Stiglitz, and Naomi Klein.

When Alan Greenspan left the Fed, he had nearly divine status in the eyes of the financial press and, I'm sorry to say, quite a few economists. In retrospect, of course, his reputation has faltered badly; whether or not you blame Fed policy for the housing bubble (you shouldn't), Greenspan denied the bubble's existence and even its possibility as it was inflating, while actively blocking efforts to tighten financial regulation.
But it's his track record since leaving office that is truly remarkable. He has been an inflation and debt fear monger, helping to make his successor's already hard job a bit harder — and famously complained about ungrateful markets that keep failing to deliver the crises he predicts. After a brief moment of doubt about the wisdom of financial markets, he went right back to denouncing regulation while proclaiming that markets get it right "with notably rare exceptions".
Now I have in my inbox a notice that as the Fed holds its annual meeting in Jackson Hole, Greenspan will address a counter-conference organized by a group called the American Principles Project. The group combines social conservatism — it's anti-gay-marriage, anti-abortion rights, and pro-"religious liberty" — with goldbug economic doctrine.

Yet, I do worry the centrality of race and racism to this particular story may convey the false impression that debilitating poverty and alienation from society are uniquely black experiences. In fact, much, though by no means all, of the horror one sees in Baltimore and many other places is really about class, about the devastating effects of extreme and rising inequality.

Tegmark takes a mathematical approach without being too mathematical. He posits the notion that earth supports conscious life, which is a mathematics aware that it is information emergent from mathematics. Its as if consciousness is an equation with both sides mathematically defined in such a way that exchanges between sides cannot go unnoticed. Whenever information passes from one side of the equation to another, the result is instantaneous self awareness in order for the mathematical structures to reconcile and be in balance. Consciousness is the eternal imbalance of two sides of a set of equations containing 32 fixed parameters, but simply capable of nonlinear adjustment. The sets of equations, Tegmark describes by their various degrees of universality of information. The extra ocean heat is coming from the atmosphere, said Braddock Linsley, an oceanographer at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University and lead author of the study.
"Because the ocean is in contact with the atmosphere, there's heat exchange between the atmosphere and the surface ocean," he said. "It seems that about 90 percent of the heat that should be in the atmosphere right now with all that extra CO2 [humans have emitted since 1999] has gone into the ocean.

The world is woefully unprepared for a massive volcanic eruption that could kill millions of people and destroy much of modern society, a leading group of scientists have warned.
In a new report on the risks posed by natural disasters, experts at the European Science Foundation concluded that large volcanic eruptions posed the greatest risk human survival.
They calculated that there is between a five to 10 per cent probability of an explosive eruption large enough to cause huge numbers of deaths, alter the climate and poison the atmosphere occurring by the end of the century.

TransCanada Corp.’s Energy East scraps plans for a Quebec port: report | Montreal Gazette
The Parti Québécois opposition welcomed news that TransCanada Corp. will not build an oil port in Quebec as part of its cross-country Energy East pipeline project.
The company originally planned to pump Western Canadian oil, at a rate of up to 1.1 million barrels per day, through to terminals in Cacouna and Saint John's, N.B.. The choice of Cacouna, the site of a beluga nursery, was met with a public outcry in Quebec.
TransCanada reportedly considered other locations—Lévis, Bécancour and Baie-des-Sables, near Matane—before ruling out a Quebec port, according to a La Presse exclusive citing unnamed sources.
"It's a beautiful victory for the preservation and sustainability of the belugas we have in the St. Lawrence River," the PQ's natural resources critic, Bernard Drainville, said in a news conference on Wednesday

Mentions Quebec balancing its budget ... but why would Quebec do that unless it is rolling in funding ...
Prentice has plenty of room to cut. He leads the most extravagant, lavish, feckless government in Canada's history, by far.
And with Pierre Trudeau in the mix, that's quite an accomplishment.
Alberta spends $1,300 more, per person, than the national average. Budget tables show it spending 22 per cent more than B.C., per capita.
Indeed, forget per capita. Despite their smaller population, they outspend B.C., period.
Another inflection point? You know you're in trouble when Quebec leaves you in the dust.
La belle province just brought down a balanced budget, courtesy of, of all things, a Liberal administration. And in Quebec, "Liberal" actually means liberal, not conservative like B.C.'s governing party.
