A strain of bird flu that hit the Netherlands in 2003 travelled by air, a hitherto suspected by unproven route of transmission

POTENTIALLY fatal bird flu viruses can spread on the wind, a hitherto suspected but unproven route of transmission.

Usually, people catch bird flu through close physical contact with each other or, much more commonly, with infected poultry.

The newly identified capacity for wind to spread it opens up a potential route by which the viruses can spread between farms.

The finding came about after Dutch researchers studied an outbreak of the avian flu strain H7N7 in poultry on Dutch farms in 2003, which resulted in 89 confirmed human infections including one death.

Computer models showed that wind patterns at the time of the outbreak explain how different genetic variants of H7N7 ended up on different farms (Journal of Infectious Diseases, doi.org/j3b).

H5N1 is the most harmful strain of avian flu, having killed 360 of 610 infected people since it was discovered in 2003. The fact that a related strain can travel on the wind suggests that H5N1 can too, says Marion Koopmans of the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in Bilthoven, who coordinated the research project. "You must assume that this same potential is there for H5N1," she says.

THE ice sheets of West Antarctica are warming much faster than we thought, suggesting swathes of it could melt and send global sea levels soaring.

Climatologists have struggled to work out whether Antarctica is warming, and how quickly, because it has few weather stations and the records from some are incomplete.

David Bromwich of Ohio State University in Columbus and his colleagues filled in the gaps for one key station using statistics and data from a climate model. They conclude that temperatures since 1958 have risen about 0.46 °C per decade – more than twice as fast as previously thought (Nature Geoscience, doi.org/j351).

But Michael Mann at Penn State University in University Park says that warmer ocean water flooding in underneath the sheet poses a greater threat.

Changing direction of communications technologies requires government intervention to establish the framework of discussions about the net human costs of wireless.

The rest of us are passive victims to idiot mentality that refuses to see their own perilous position as in the case of passive smoke inhilation! The key is to ban wireless communication substituting in the many safer and more effective ways to communicate electronically.

Probably, it is not that hard to rebuild our communications from innovation in wired technologies. There would be different players and governments would need to redirect r&d efforts!

We should just skip this generation of bad technologies, our wireless age, as a bad joke or a series of monster technological errors that have unmanageable human costs.

In any event, wired is significantly faster, more reliable, secure and economic .... In my humble opinion!

My Comments before the link to Katz' comments!

By some perverse realities those furthest from cell towers are likely to experience the greatest bursts of heavy radiation from using their own cell phones because more energy is required in use the cell phone antenna when further away from the mast!..... However, those close to cell towers are exposed longest to the stronger "I am here so find and use me" beacon! 

Possibly the solution is to effect a change in the beacon antenna technology so that it operates on a wake up basis rather than 'I am telling you where I am'! 

Saturation with wake up beacons might reduce radiation overall since it is the beacon radiation that permeates continuously our every fiber! 

So lets get the safest wakeable beacon and responder technology and require that the telecom companies install this technology. 

Radiation from cell phones in open air is about 15 centimeters and under that there is danger of stimulation of the amygdala cells which if cancerous could lead to mad people shooting up scores of schools!  Who is to say that the Connecticut massacre is not related to overstimulation of the perpetrator's amygdala? Needs research as much as gun legislation!

Similarly, in the home there is no sense in having a beacon radiation form of contamination! Force a change to safer WIFI technologies, ones that minimize amygdada stimulation?

If local authorities can't stop the spread of cell towers, they can alternatively really gear up to tax the hell out of unsafe antennas!  Put the unsafe antennas in such a high local tax bracket that they fail to cover implementation costs!

What remains is to rank antennas and forms of antenna use according to relative safety? Big task, but something an enlightened government could entertain! Heavy taxes on the huge profits of these companies would be fair because it would fall directly on users and providers.

What the studies designers failed to take into account was cordless home phone users - DECT phones - the study did not take into account if the person used cordless phones at home. They are possibly more dangerous than cell phones because they transmit at full power for the entire duration of the conversation. Cell phones increase and decrease their power depending on how close the user is to a tower which is why the conventional wisdom is to not use your cell phone if you have one or two bars on the connection indicator. By stark contrast, DECT cordless home phones do NOT decrease their power - the operate flat out at 100% power for the duration of the call no matter how close or far you are from the phone base. Add to that users who keep the base of the phone next to their bed exposing them for the entire duration of their sleep, you quickly start to see that the entire study is a joke. To summarize, if someone who didn't use a cell phone but used a home cordless phone for several years and got a brain tumor, they skewed the entire study when they reported their cell phone use - they didn't use a cell phone and got a tumor.
