The Burden of Poverty from Restructuring Economies in Photographs by Chris Killips

Woooosh wrote:
Nov 11th 2010 10:18 GMT

I think that it is easy to point the finger at politicians and say they are responsible for many of the sad scenes that we witness. To say that Thatcher is in any way responsible for poverty and the misery that impoverishment brings is just opportunist clap trap. More to the point is that we know companies need to be reshaped to survive international competition and we know this produces unemployment of people who cannot be lucky at the time change happens. Those fortunate enough to weather the storms of restructuring economies are richer beyond all imaginings and some would turn around to say thank you. Many scenes in black and white conjure up our understanding that most of us are the lucky ones who have time to ponder photographs rather than pick through rubbish tips in search or morsels. Thatcher was right however to point out that reinforcing success is the best way to combat weakness. The photos of people succeeding should encourage us to take on greater burdens for our friends and neighbors.

I had a look at the following column in the economist and then added the words found above.  Read for yourself.  Do you think it is right to blame those politicians such as Margaret Thatcher that have done so much to restructure weak economies even though it causes pain?  The banking crisis of today would not have happened under Maggy's watch, believe me!

In my view, the decision to restructure an economy that Maggy took is like that one one saying two groups are going to suffer over time and one has to choose which group to spare.  The youth of Britain were spared.  That takes courage and that is what Maggy had despite the consequences.  The route Gordon Brown took us to is much less courageous and damns many more people to poverty and pain.  The youth of Britain have to suffer because of Gordon Brown not being watchful enough and enjoying the housing boom.  The present coalition for all it's courage should be supported despite the sadness of austerity that results from earlier sleepy governance.

The Alarm Bells of Our Failing International Institutions

Watching the English police in the street maintain a semblance of law and order in leading democracies such as London who never fail to preach about the importance of free speech and association, should remind us of how frail the international progress with our international UN institutions of the last fifty years really is. The League of Nations failed several decades before world war. Will we witness the fall of the United Nations and an international disarray that few can imagine?

It's one thing to say that the world wide web and improved communications are a force for peace, but they can also be abused. Who would want to think about how horrible that would be; the rise of a political force determined to put forward a strong program of hard toothed solutions to our present discontent!

No! What we really want is our bumbling democracies to muddle through amid protest and change without those people of a harder bent taking control. But, we are very close tom the tipping point towards that Platonic wheel of political change that predicts chaos.

It's very conceivable that we will fail to introduce a substitute for oil before the stress of a fluid world energy shortage results in serious clashes between the forces for stability and the lack of responsibility that emerges through desperation.

The problem arises because of debt that one generation accumulates and attempts to pass on to the next. When a new generation does not assume the burden of the excesses of a previous generation, the rapid transformations and adjustments needed for stability tend to erode respect and trust in the legal system.

Gradually, the new generation forces the issue seeking an advantage not by democracy but by fierce and by fighting amongst themselves. Bam! you have the instability everyone wants to avoid but few of the previous generation did much to address let alone understand.

It's not good enough that we don't know how to solve our present predicament. The spring is wound tighter and tighter as disagreement between influential parties becomes more fierce. Whoa betide the individuals that come in the middle, the innocents and the weak of the current and new generations who are dragged into a conflict between extremes willing to do more and more at the edge of violence in order to succeed.

Barriers to Market Entry in Modern Situations - Why Interest Rates and Exchange Rates Should Not Matter, but have Created Into the Central Position of Fed Policy

The way to grow jobs is to reduce barriers to market entry by firms creating new jobs. Unfortunately, politics and financial policies put the kibosh on new jobs while bewailing the fact of domestic firms being uncompetitive. Firms don't need the protection of a weak exchange rate since competitive products would be price insensitive. Firms need to make their products more innovative and less price sensitive. Sure America buys rubbish, but that is because firms in America are not innovating sufficiently but relying on protectionism. The reason is complex, but has to do with lack of understanding by money people of what it takes to enter into new markets and create jobs.

Under the present form of financial management under the central banks, policy focusing on letting firms consolidate industry at an accelerating rate and increasing the barriers to entry, misses the point that we are still at war with communism. It's too easy for large firms to use their financial clout to stop innovation by small firms. Rather than creating jobs and grow the economy, the role of the stock market has been to kill capitalism. In the end, we will have less innovation at home and less originating abroad.

If you don't see that you need to put on your research hat. The benign aspects of innovation in creating a future without communism have taken a knock with the failure of authorities to support a genuine competitive system. Without genuine competition and successful market entry, we will become China Inc under Chinese Communism without our hard gained freedoms. That much should be clear!!!! The fed seems to have the idea that always supporting economies of scale somehow helps economic growth and the deficit. What are firms to do with all the liquidity other than use it to curb competition.

Nourishing Seasonal Soup

Try this for a seasonal selection, spinach and squash blended soup. In the UK, Morrisons sell spinach in cans or jars. The squash you can get from the vegetable section. Blend thoroughly and add your favourite spices or curries with other vegetables. Use the pumpkin sitting on your doorstep if you must. Gives you plenty of Pop Eye iron!

The Light of the Matter

In an earlier blog, we noted how strong Suzy Malin felt about the importance of her lighting and natural light in the process of painting and creative art.

Studies show that stores with better lighting might find more customers willing to pay the prices they charge and visit more often.

http://www.miller-mccune.com/business-economics/stores-lighting-influences-perceptions-of-quality-24233/

Light strongly can influence ones perception of the quality of a community setting such as a mall or coffee shop or book store making one more inclined to spend more time there. If communities devoted more time to seeing how light and colour influence their residents and visitors, they could profit.

Article: Modern Art Was CIA 'Weapon'

The Power of Art

It seems improbable, but apparently the CIA supported expressionism as a way to undo communism.  If one saw the art that was produced in the Solviet Union, then the idea that American modern expressionism could undermine Russian art has to be argued very carefully as it is in the following article:

The Most Important Goal of a Central Bank is to Gain the Trust of Reasonable People

I have to wonder whether Mish has justification for what he is saying in a recent blog. When I examined the policy of the Fed some years ago, I assumed that the error of the Fed at that time was due to a lack of basic understanding of the economics of banking and getting the inflation index defined wrongly. Perhaps, my assumption is correct. The other hypothesis could be that of Mish in which the inflationary bubble was engineered.

Alternatively, one could say the governors of Fed and the economists in the banking system were very much asleep at the wheel, poorly trained, had not read enough economic history, inadequate to the task of understanding criminality in banking, non familiar with the process of competitive forces and the merger movement, conducive to unproven technologies in finance or perhaps drunk or intoxicated, lacking in understanding of the economies of scale in banking finance and predisposition to greed.

Maybe, the leadership of George Bush was to blame and it is a story of persistent greed overriding common sense, a form of addiction in which one lies to oneself about the outcome. If one cannot tell lies from truth, then one continues in self deception and takes everyone along.

Whether we like it or not the strategy of the Fed ignores the economic history of inflations following a war financed on excessive debt. Weakening the dollar and keeping interest rates low in an attempt to spur on growth is reading the economics text book written in America, which we should realise by now is incorrect.

We don't like to think there are sinister motives behind the Fed's move, which gambles on a deflationary psychology but our trust is weakening, like that of Mish. When we say that credit demand drives the system we are saying just that. Does the Fed expect another round of credit demand in face of an emerging foreclosure crisis? How do we ever get out of this mess now?

Quietly Expanding Customer Base by Offering Wheat Free

In the UK, Nero's, Morrison's and Sainsbury's are quietly building a customer base for wheat free customers. Ahead of the major health crisis these retailers are offering wheat free products that are as good if not better that products that add flour. Most flour additions are unnecessary. They are dangerous for the wheat free croud!

Did Obama Save Capitalism?

Some writers believe that Obama should be given credit for taking a chance that resulted in the saving of the American capitalist way of life, for which, of course, he got what amounts to a kick in the teeth. This is about the same as Churchill received for leading the Brits during the struggle against Hitler.

Well the policies presently in place still have to unfold be they ever so unfair.

There is something in human nature that wants to escape the horror of remembering what things could have been like without the odd leader that takes an uncomfortable stand for us, and the best way is to eliminate the real savior from ones mind. It may be that the person has taken an opposing view to our own and we don't like to be reminded how things would have turned out had we been leader.

There would be too much responsibility owed to one person if we were to thank those to whom we owe so much. As remembrance day nears, we might thank those that fought in the Battle of Britain to which we owe so much.

James McMullen - The Artist - Line by Line Drawing - An Introduction

While working full time in the early 1980s, I created a fun blog (using ATTs primeval internet) which I focused on line art that I did while in Washington DC during my lunch breaks. The pleasure one can derive from drawing is very personal. I used a primitive version of Microsoft PowerPoint to get the material on line and had the PowerPoint presenter display it for this early audience. Other artists have had interesting experiences getting on line, such as James McMullen.

Want to learning how to draw and enjoy the fun of sketching. Have a look at James McMullen's blog and New York Times articles.

America Votes Republicans into Congress

The voters have made their choice and they favoured the Republicans. Now, Congress needs to get to work and sort out that housing headache! It's no good flooding the economy with more money to stimulate growth, but if people pay down debt that helps. One has to wonder whether in such a period of deflation whether paying off a mortgage is an attractive option. No! And, that's the problem.

The not so subtle message the American people may be sending Obama and Congress is that the real work to sort out the economy has not started and what has been done has not gone in the right direction.

While America spends more dollars, other countries want to spend less, but are getting caught up in what could become a 1973-76 style world inflation resulting from a flight from dollars and a push to grab energy resources. Many countries have too much liquidity and seek to reduce inflationary risks without encouraging deflationary risks.

The Confusing Arena of Left and Right Wing Politics Which is the Wrong Way to Understand Politics

It's not really an issue of democrat against republican or liberal against conservative or right against left wing. That's what makes modern political dialogue so confusing. We get wrapped up so much in labels that don't tell us very much.

It might be more helpful to understand politics in terms of large and small. Small things often grow to be large things. Children grow to become adults. Our treatment of small and immature things is very different from our treatment of large and mature things. We know that large things have a way of protecting themselves and gaining a handle on situations. Large people tend to have different issues from small people. Large companies have different issues from small ones.

We can also factor in age. If things grow large they then tend to be older. The needs of older entities and people are very different from the needs of younger entities and people. So to understand the position of things, we need to understand their age and size, or at the age and size of the grouping to which they belong.

What we find is that larger and older entities and people tend to have advantages at their peak and then disadvantages when they are over the hump.

Right and left wing reflects interests not of whether radical change is appropriate or not, but what the entity or person belonging to a particular grouping sees as it's interests.

What confuses the politics is that entity age groupings and people age groupings do not match and frequently work at cross purposes. An older company should have things sorted out for it's retirees, but we find that an older company to stay young hires young people who do not want the interests of older staff to be catered to. The mix between old and young causes political conflict.

Similarly, small company interests are very different from large company interests and their politics reflect that. It's too much of a short cut to say that large company interests reflect the interests of older people. The politics of large and small organizations is very different.

The Competitive Inequity that Modern and Traditional Banks Create

Ever wonder why there is unemployment. It is not something to be easy found within the ideas of Keynes General Theory or within the ideas of innovation to be found in Schumpeter. To be sure, it is contained in both the long and short term approaches of these theories, but the fact is that the role of the banking system in both is somewhat misunderstood or just plain lacking.

Put very simply banks, especially large banks enjoy economies of scale. If they want to make money they do preferential lending to big customers. Big customers put more money in more branches mor widespread across the country or globe than small customers. Big customers demand that banks treat them preferentially.

So why is the British Prime Minister surprised that he cannot get big banks to lend to small business?

It should be obvious.

Big banks have both customer small and customer big as customers. Customer small asks the bank for a loan that will take away business from customer big. Bank says no to customer small because it wants the revenue of customer big to continue and figures customer big is the better bet. Banks research their customers competitive positions and get outside advice on business prospects.

If customer small and customer big are bidding for the same government procurement contract, do you think that the bank does not know. Think again because the bank has all the information of customer big and small it needs to decide which it wants to lend to. Customer big deposits in many branches and in key important branches, while customer small banks in a few branches somewhere! When the branch manager of a bank branch assesses customer big, there is a routine and similarly with customer small.

Head Office has the final say and takes two piles of files, one for customer big and one for customer small. Weighing both and taking into account relativities, customer big wins in the mind of the bank.

What happens in the government office is not so very different though it relates to familiarity breeds friendship. The supplier big is more prevalent and has more friends, especially the bank that finances or smoothest it's financial operations. Supplier big is well known and offers fewer head aches. Who would you think will win the government procurement contract? This is not yet eBay!

The Lion's Den and What Business Banks are Really Interested In!

You might have thought that banks were interested in lending to firms for investment in activities that create jobs. No, that's the role of the stock market, angel investors, government schemes, and lions. Banks lend to consumers where they can get a strong handle on the risk. They don't like lending to companies if they cannot get a superb handle on the risk.

Banks lent to the property market because they thought it was risk free. Banks want a return on investment of 35 percent so this limits their choice of risk taking somewhat. If you want 35 percent growth, you will look for three times that before lending at risk. There is not much new activity going on that will produce a growth rate of over 100 percent per annum.

Generally, small firms take a hit before they break even. Banks want the hit to occur very soon and the break even point to be within a short period, the shorter the better.

The truth is that banks are not really suited for lending for innovation. If they lend to an innovating company, it might just put another customer out of business, which is not what they want. Even if that customer banks with another bank, they do not want to put companies out of business.

Capitalistic innovation requires winners and losers so banks are not in the game of innovation.

They want to make loans for working capital after a revenue stream has been well identified and established. Then there is low risk and they act as an insurance lender in the event of a hiccup. The gamble banks take is that the winners will always outnumber the losers and the and bad loans will be very limited. The 35 percent growth on capital is quite sacrosanct and the charges banks impose reflect this need to make profits in excess of interest rates.

The high rates on consumer credit create bad loans, but this does not seem to phase banks, who create a sheltered pattern of approval for new lending that maximizes the return on capital even if it is at the expense of customers. Consumer loans for credit cards are a two stage process of profit taking. Make a profit lending to the lending credit card bank and also make a profit lending as the credit card bank!

Both make a return of greater than 35 percent on capital which is built into their charges. So choose only addicted customers who are so desperate for money that they always maintain an excellent credit record. That this excellent credit record comes from playing the field of lenders is unseen or ignored. Borrowing is a secret addiction and the most common one, ahead of alcohol, and it leads to stress and premature death.

Growth in credit comes from the demand of established customers for working capital be this consumption or investment. This is what banks are interested in.

Fighting Viruses and the Body's Immune System

These days, progress in medical science is the result of thorough research into the mechanisms of disease and the means at hand in the body to fight. We have all suspected that the strengthening of the body's own immune system would be the way of much future medicine. How do we do it, however? It's one thing to take vitamin C which apparently does not work very well, but what are the other options. Science has discovered more secrets about how the body fights it's enemies. You might ask whether it really knows how to identify them.

Who Does Not Believe in a Second Energy Crunch, Please Stand Up!

You might be forgiven for feeling the past decade and its over-investment was a conspiracy of vested interests. What do you think about how a price war for energy might shape up?

As the excess production of dollar credit finances growth of production outside America, it will most assuredly help China and India as they bid against each other for more and more of the energy pie.

America Will Help Create a Second Dynamo Economy - India

In the UK, we have been tied to the mistaken notion that America is our strongest economic ally ignoring the fact that Germany is the powerhouse economy that enables the UK to relax over the dismal fiscal performance of Greece and Spain. What America has done in the past decade for Britain no friend would do.

Well, fighting wars in the Middle East boosted British arm sales and gave more control over the status quo of oil suppliers, but one wonders about this alliance of convenience to very large security interests, oil and arms is not the best way to grow an economy any more than banking and home sales.

Now, we are faced with a prospect of seeing India being transformed into a dynamo economy along American designs. The catch is that India will do much better than China over the longer term and it's economic influence will reshape the world economy more assuredly as it competes with China, Europe and The Americas.

More Quantitative Easing Reflects Severity of Long Term Adjustment Needed

One of the great difficulties in designing short term policy such as being unleashed in America is that there is no accurate measure of production potential. This means that capacity is idle, but forecasters have no idea whether or not the idle capacity is a permanent loss to the economy that will have to be corrected through structural changes, job and capital reassignment.

There is the hope, and is a risky hope that by increasing effective demand through government initiatives some of the idle capacity will become active.

The problem is that those who would demand credit for business need to be convinced that they can make a return on their borrowing. In the past decade, one gets the impression, rightly or wrongly that those demanding credit were primarily consumers, construction, speculators, large firms, merger interests, banks taking undue risks, insurance, and home builders.

The big question is who the increase in credit will benefit. If one said terrorists who want credit for arms deals that would cause a bit of worry, but perhaps these are just the very entities that will benefit most from more dollars seeking to make a return.

That the idea of more money in the system can produce jobs is simplistic. What it can do is produce votes for the Republican Party in the short term as these large corporate interests and many profligate consumers realize their dreams out of the Bush Administration's fling with property and a level of overall consumption unsupportable by the manufacturing side of the economy.

Whether, the demand for credit will come from small business is a risk, but even if realized, it will push ahead risky investment in time that could create a weaker base for efficiency in the longer term. Business that finds things easy feeds off an insatiable demand in America for rubbish or unnecessary spending.

That's the issue. A weak dollar does little to spur investment in efficient production in America. That would be too easy. But, it does create credit for foreign manufacturers investing outside America as these dollars filter abroad as the US balance of trade worsens. Suck, suck..

Credit Creation As Coming Before Money Creation and Manchester United

Those who see the ownership of Manchester United as being based on credit created in the United States for a retailer based in the United States might be forgiven for wondering how an economy, especially a world economy works.

Mike Shedlock, a blogger on the global economy, captures the conundrum very succinctly by saying credit creation comes before money creation.

I respect Mike's view very much, but the fact remains that he is self schooled in economics, or at least that is what I understand from other blogs. So, how much credence do you give to a guy who reads a lot?

Well, I think you will learn much if you read Mike's blogs. Mike is also known as Mish to his many readers, and there are many of them.

What economics classes do generally is present loads of detail about what the present state of affairs without telling you much about how they got there. Mish says credit comes first, and he is absolutely right. Credit bids up the price of money and the authorities then supply the money to reduce it's price. Without official creation of money, it's price would be too high for governments to finance their own debt, the credit we have given them to do things we voted them to do.

Mish is right to say it's important to add history to the economic analysis. If you don't have the story then all you have is the accounting, which amounts to a whole lot of balance sheets adding to zero. All the pluses must add to all the minuses, zero out in total. All the sources of finance add up to all the uses.

All entities have a balance sheet. We all do whether we realize it or not.

What then is credit?

Credit is an accounting entry on the asset side of a balance sheet, i.e. credit, by some entity that is authorized to make such entries, a lender, for some entity that is authorized to receive such entities, i.e. a customer. The lender will charge an interest rate but the actual interest rate has yet to be determined.

Before someone can use the new credit the lending entity may have to go out and buy money and make it available to the customer. For money to be created in it's balance sheet, it will bid in the money market and the price of money will go up just that small amount needed.

Assume a huge amount is lent, then a bid will raise the price of money appreciably and the market price for money will rise, that is, the interest rate for money will rise.

This is where the central bank steps into the picture because the raising of interest rates is not on its own going to increase the supply of money in the system. To keep the interest rate from rising the central bank will supply credit to the lender, or lenders as a market, by offering money at an interest rate lower than the market rate.

Thus, the central bank increases the money supply by issuing it's own credit, which results in monetary expansion. With matching monetary expansion, the interest rate does not move.

This is how credit creation drives the system in the modern economy. Advances by banks create a demand for money which is obtained within the banking system. If the system is short of money, the central ban will lend it to the market in order to avoid interest rates going up.

You might wonder whether a government operates like a bank. Well, consider that it may have a balance sheet that can create loans and the money for these loans needs to come from the central bank by the central bank giving credit to the banks that lend to the government.

So there you have it, the government behaves like a bank and has a borrowing requirement that is met by central bank loans. If the interest rate does not go up, it means that demand for credit by other entities has fallen or the central bank has created money for the system, that is, more credit for the system.

Mike Shedlock / Mish has many words of wisdom....

Deflation?

Occasionally, those not trained specifically in economics produce commentary that fires one to think.

I have been formally trained in economics and economic history, which is perhaps a disadvantage if discussing economics with Mish.

Mish has an excellent grasp of the issues and his ideas are not to be disregarded because they are not conventional.  Perhaps, insights coming from a wide breadth of reading qualify one more than the passing of exams. Well done, Mish.  You are a man to read:

Why Keynes Would Agree With The Idea of Government Supported Investment at Home

In Keyne's day, the structure of economies was very different from what it is today. His emphasis on short term investment to get job numbers up was speculative to say the least. New investment could introduce new technology that would spur on efficiency of labour and reduce employment numbers. Schumpeter the economic historian understood what Keynes did not understand and that was the real dynamic of the business cycle within an economy that's evolving. However, put Keynes and Schumpeter together and you get a better perspective of what new investment might do. You also see where US economic policies fight each other. One is that America wants jobs, but has implemented policies that encourage unemployment and inefficiency.

The reason is that economists designing American policies are not very skilled in applying all the economic sciences together in an integrated fashion. They produce piecemeal policies that an economic historian would regard as ludicrous. Too many investment ideas don't mix macro and micro economic concepts very well or neglect non linear economic dynamics and product mix evolution. Bad understanding of economics leads to ineffective policy and huge mistakes in macroeconomic management such as we have seen. Business schools, economics departments, and economic history departments are just that separate schools of practice and thought leading to a mishmash of weirdness and inconsistency.

Spending on new equipment will help growth in a domestic context such as the United States in the modern context because of the shift of employment to other economies. It is extremely important to reduce the cost of capital investment in an advanced economy competing with a labour rich economy. Get rid of the taxes on investment in the United States and growth will result and it will be in keeping with the ideas of the great economists. Reduce capital gains taxes in advanced economies in order to slow down the export of jobs to labour rich economies.

The cost will be greater economies of scale rising in advanced economies and more employment in the labour rich economies. The source of growth in an advanced economy that has skilled labour must be investment in capital that can use that labour and achieve efficiencies.

To encourage investment in equipment, and to create jobs in an advanced economy, it is not a good idea to have a weak exchange rate as that will encourage inefficiencies of all forms and the export of efficient manufacturing to other countries.

Why Do Good Economists Disagree?

It's very confusing that the social scientists occupy a world of knowledge that seems far less secure than the world of knowledge occupied by the physical scientists. The social sciences, such as economics, are not so different in reliability.

What people fail to understand is that a social science discovery has a sell-by and use-by date that comes much sooner than that of the physical sciences because the number of variables is much larger. Not only that, but the world of the social sciences is non linear and few economists can explain their thinking to audiences unskilled in non linear thought. The world thinks in a linear way despite the fact that almost everything in the social world happens in a non linear way. Dah! Most social science stuff is too difficult for the man in the street to understand consciously, but unconsciously there may be hope.

Similarly, a good social science non linear law lasts for a very short period, while a good physical science non linear law lasts almost endlessly. Look at chaos mathematics and ask how you convey the truths of that to the broad public. By the time a social science law is discovered the social world has gone, but by the time a physical law is discovered the world will be able to use it for a while.

Thus, when you read an economist's views you need to assess how long the views, even if correct, will last, probably not much longer than a good weather forecast made a week in advance of the weather. That weather forecasts are much better is quite evident, but this is probabilistic. They are more probably better, but not certainly better. The sell-by dates for an economist's views are fairly short, so one has to be very careful when using them. Some economist's views are stale the moment they are spoken, being based on other economist views, which are stale. Most economists views are stale and it is difficult to find fresh ones, but when you do, they are very very usable.

We Make A Mistake If We Ignore History And Why We Should Not Ignore Milton Friedman on Money

Too much money all at once and you get inflation? Well, the evidence suggests that money is the main source of inflationary impulse. Actually, we may not get inflation because we may be increasing money at a time of growth and the growth may require more money. The problem is that if we do not know when growth will occur, we do not know when we should have more money. It's not a question of Keynes versus Friedman. It's a question of the economics of short run expectations and risk against long term prudence and hedging. Keynes was a risk taker as we see from his speculation at Cambridge in commodities. Friedman was a hedger who knew that too much money at the wrong time produced real social problems down the road.

We have seen the inflation and now we are seeing more risk taking should the growth that we all want to see not happen. Well, the reality's that the world is growing and it needs dollars because dollars are the only world currency apart from gold and SDRs. That SDRs get translated into dollars at some point is self evident and that SDRs as dollars are hot money is risky. Should however the dollars produce a bout of commodity inflation similar to what happened in the 1970s, we would have real problems.

The risk is real that we will see a race to commodities out of dollars and should that happen we will get out our Milton Friedman papers and understand that he said that he told us so. What are you in favor of inflation as a risk or growth. Chances are that it is the weaker advanced economies that will suffer most!

The Saint Thomas Approach Won't Work For Our Natural Friends

In Christianity, there is what I would term the Saint Thomas approach which is the doubting Thomas approach of not believing something without first hand sight. This approach to religion places the onus of proof onto the conveyor of evidence. Unless, the messenger can actually show real visible proof, the message is not accepted as believable. We tend not to believe that human use of food from other countries might damage the world ecosystem.

Some times, the approach will not work because of the basic flaw in it's logic:

The Problem with Economists: Keynesian, Monetarist, and Pragmatist

The fact is that economists differ in their advice because they are paid to differ. There are very few self employed economists. Ronald Brech of Wimbledon was one such economist, and I had the immense joy of working for him. His ideas evoked brilliance compared with the run of the mill economists that I have had to deal with before or since.

Maybe it's being an independent economist that helps one achieve the understanding of business and macroeconomics simultaneously, but I don't think that it's just that. One must add that economists are pretty awful if they are not totally immersed in reading economic history very thoroughly. The worst economists are those that come out of mathematics and try to give the idea that mathematics is the be all and end all of the science.

They are dead wrong and the huge monster mistakes their notions can spread is horrendous.

So get an economist who is steeped in economic history and pragmatism, knows that business cycles are a very real phenomenon and has the wisdom to understand how money works an economy. You are bound to get better policy as a result.

We see the buying off of economic policy in political events and campaigns. Paid off economists, the ones that can be bought for a dime will tell the political candidates and the public what they want to hear. Things like the economy needs a stimulus are always popular so these economic solutions come simultaneously from the mouths of paid off economists of opposing sides in economic debates. Give us a break!

Especially economists in universities are paid off so don't think they are slightest bit independent. No, to find an economist that is not bought by politicals or comp orates, is just plain difficult.

Paul Krugman's Assessment of the Obama Chances Prior to the US Mid-term

Krugman as an economist, you would be foolish not to respect. He puts words into my mouth when he writes as well as this article:

Why American Reform May Not Happen!

The rest of the world has often viewed American politics with disbelief. How can a country that claims to be progressive be so very backward in key issues. America seems to have become an inventor of mistakes, no, an innovator, which is more dangerous. It's not that America does not have great ideas, but that a democracy as large as America is doomed to fail in common sense if there is a large sector of companies that have non-democratic agendas, but non of the prevalent common sense.

In America, it's not the people who govern but moneyed interests and large business interests. Such people are interested in themselves. The mistake is to see America as any different from a chaotic result of mathematics at play where random results are not likely to occur so long as the machinery of politics favors those with money and influence.

The Importance of Being an Independent Blogger and there is Pepsigate

I make it pretty obvious that I am an independent blogger. That means that I have my own standards to adhere to. My writing is full of flaws and my logic is not air tight, but I am independent unlike some I know of who are paid by corporations to present a view. The Pepsigate controversy arose because of the lack of independence in a science blog world:

State of Fear

What are the real risks from climate change and should we be worried? Some say we should be agnostic to the idea that there is a real problem. In my view, the idea that we should ignore the very real possibility of climate change, however gradual, is rather naive and misguided. I welcome the efforts by scientists to explore what could be the biggest issue of our children's future. I am not afraid that it might mean crazy ideas, but I think all the silly ideas need to be placed on the table and examined. That Al Gore had the inclination to explore these issues is wonderful whether he supported a Democratic or Republican political viewpoint is immaterial. Everyone should be concerned and a not a little afraid as our ancestors were.

The Problem for America of a Weak Dollar and Credit Creation

It should not come as a surprise that the management of an exchange rate, international finance and monetary policy is a multiple edged sword.

A major issue is the ease with which US firms relocate production to China and the low cost labour sources around the globe. This is not a bad thing for China, nor India, nor the Tiger economies of Asia. It's a bad thing for American employment. How do you figure moving the US exchange rate down somehow slows this process? To my mind, the weakening dollar reflects too many dollars doing bugger all but available to US companies to relocate their production outside the US. In fact, credit creation by George Bush accelerating the flow of jobs outside of America by making it easy for US companies to finance relocation. Dah!

The dollar's weakness is not really an advantage to America because it allows for inefficiencies in the American economy to grow. Cheapening American goods only allows US firms to be more inefficient.

The weaker US exchange rate does not slow down American imports which are due to relatively higher incomes in America. Americans have a knack for buying rubbish so a rise in the cost of this rubbish won't slow down the influx. What would slow down the inflow would be a change in the mix of goods to higher quality. This is not encouraged by weak monetary policy.

The idea that exchange rates going up or down affects trade is an old one, but the problem is that the arguments frequently neglect the mix in the value of trade, or put another way, higher incomes in America and saving would result in a trading up of the composition of imports by America. The fact that America imports more rubbish despite a weakening of its currency means that incomes in America are declining. Imports are remaining high even as the dollar value falls. The exchange rate does little to offset the trade imbalance which reshapes itself into a different mix of goods.

The perverse process of economics means that a stronger dollar might get US companies in America to produce the rubbish that it's customers seem to thrive on.

In none-rubbish products, however, a stronger dollar would force US firms to be more efficient. The problem is then that they avoid that process by migrating their production to China. So how does the exchange rate impact anything? Well, perhaps the US could consume quality rather than rubbish.

All in all, the problem is weakness in American domestic economic policy that encourages Americans to consume rubbish from China rather than quality from America. Figure that one out!

I think that maybe the solution is to force a slowdown in the American economy through more expensive money. This would make it more difficult to finance relocation in China based on credit funded in America. Perhaps, the problem is that it is too easy to relocate production to China while there is so much credit available in America to make it easy to relocate.

America Goes From Bad to Worse .. Now it is Blaming Others for a Bad Outcome when that is almost directly due to Policy at Home

Excessive credit creation is the problem and we all see it's effects in American moral decline. This is a decline into gutter fighting and hostility to moderation.

Yes! A dollar based international financial system is inadequate, but it was America that saw and forced the Euro rise in value from well under a dollar to well over a dollar where it now stands, possibly as much as 60 percent decline on occasion. The financial institutions gambled away our children's future. It was America and Britain living well beyond their means that sucked in resources and acquired resources in an aggressive bid for world economic power by their largest financial firms.

A country that can't get it's act together on credit creation for wasteful development of it's property sector should not go around pointing it's finger at everyone else and say they are to blame. No, America, the buck stops with you. Your system is to blame for the present US and world crisis and more credit creation is not the solution. The American dollar printing press is not the answer.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702303738504575567431511483738.html?mod=djemTEW_h

The answer is more discipline for the US dollar within a new international currency system based on a new IMF SDR mechanism in which credit creation for me sake of economic and political warfare and dominance is not rewarded. Yes, American, you have been fighting a war and there is a bill because you have not been victorious. That may be a shame, but it does not mean that you can acquire the assets of other countries with impunity just because your banks and financial institutions and derived monster companies gamble with those dollars your economy has created and cannot sustain. The dollar is weak because it is being used maliciously.

Under such a new international system all countries would be required to exercise discipline and the industrial countries would not be able to spend their way, gamble, their way further and further into debt the way Gordon Brown and the administration of George Bush did.

Why Reforms in America are Very Expensive and Slow

Ever wonder who opposes legislation for business reforms in America? Those in established positions have the money to oppose legislation that would get the ducks in line for effective competition. It's not surprising that occasionally the US seems so far behind the ball on matters of vital concern to the rest of the world. Rich minorities rule through financing opposition campaigns.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a leading force against President Obama, has seen sizable donations from top corporations including Dow Chemical and Goldman Sachs.
