Putin would like to believe what he says, but he is way off course and overextending himself.
Truth is that he, as a long term dictator himself, pretends!
He should be statesmanly democratic and resign....before the internal conflicts of Russian neighbours flow back into his very own lap, conflicts with chemical weapons from Georgia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and more!
Russia should focus on its very serious conflicts simmering at home.
What will Russia gain from supporting countries that don't give a toot for communism?
Despite all the bad stuff ...
