That the Second World War defined the English as a people in a way no other event ever could, is undoubtedly true. That we are also mostly defined by our contemporaries is also very true. As we grow old those that can relate to the many things that we have as urgencies and priorities diminishes at an accelerating rate, so that if we are very old, as in the case of Eileen Nearne, it's almost strange for the young to realise we ever existed. We must trumpet our own horns while we live for once we are gone what we were or did for most part increasingly no longer has meaning.
